NBA players earn their entire year's worth of salary in a week. :wtf:

Its because no-one watches MLS. Leo Messi apparently gets paid 20m Euros a year, or $27m. That's Kobe money

Euro soccer players' salary has announced is actually NET total with agent fees paid, taxes paid by the team etc... So when messi is said to earn 50 million or whatever it's the amount he gets in his bank account.

NBA, NFL etc salaries are GROSS total. Kobe may make $25 million But a big chunk will go to his agent, taxes to uncle Sam, and any obligational fees. So he will end up maybe with $16 million out of that $25 mil.

They don't bring in enough money to warrant more. Can't pay more in salaries than you make in profit

Its not like the MLS is the NBA of soccer. There are several leagues that are higher in competition.

What a stupid thread, there are football players who get a wage of 500 thousand dollars a week.

Would be like someone saying basketball players in europe don't earn that in a year.

This. Compare MLS salaries to a secondary pro bball league and see what you get.

Barely any TV revenue. How you gonna pay players with no TV money? NBA has billions coming from ESPN and TNT.

thats pretty sad. you've got some really talented players over there. as i was in the us in the course of a school exchange, nearly everyone was playing soccer. for real. especially the girls, but lots of the boys also. it was funny to see, that lots of people were playing soccer, but only watching nfl or nba:lol

and btw: nobody cared about baseball. never seen anyone playing it. but mlb players are paid in a ridiculous way

compared to 90s, baseball fell off. baseball was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more popular in the 90s.

basketball is the greatest team sport in the world.

You know it, I know it, Ish knows it.

Just taking time for the rest of the world to catch up on that fact.

But athlete salaries are no indicator of sporting events and their impact. I mean look at the Tour de France. Those guys bring down maybe a couple million for their teams but literally Billions of people watch the race each year, and business revenues are magnitudes higher than the NFL playoffs.

And cycling pales in comparison to soccer!!

MLS is a soccer league

Because MLS is not even close to the elite soccer league.

Its like saying NBA players make more than Triple A baseball players, or that NFL players make more than D-League players.

mls isnt even a top10 football league.

messi and ronaldo make about 50M before taxes, which almost doubles the best NBA salaries

Max players get somewhere around $250,000 per game in the NBA. Damn, soccer players are getting $36,000 a season?

Meh a quick glance at that list shows plenty of MLS players making over 100k per year for playing a sport they presumably enjoy ... that's a sweeter deal than most average Americans.

If they want higher salaries, then grow the sport and generate more revenue, simple as that.

Or simply be good at football and move to a better, higher paying league.

Yeah I mean if you're not good enough to cut it in the Euro leagues where the big money is, but you're still a pretty decent level soccer player, then I'd say the MLS is a pretty sweet deal. You can earn from the looks of it a respectable, even decent six figure salary for doing something you love rather than having to ice your soccer talents and take a "regular" job somewhere else.

these are actually really good salaries for a league as shitty as mls..most of these unknown players would struggle finding similar contracts in europe.

why are people defending leagues in Europe ? this isn't a contest between NBA and soccer in general. this thread is just looking at how little MLS players are paid

its not about defending europe. its just that mls is such a small league in football, that obviously it cant be compared to the biggest league in basketball(nba), and NFL and MLB
