First off, as a coach I think he's top 5 all-time and a brilliant man so this is no slight to his coaching.

But I'm really getting sick of how every intermission they got to get a coach Pop interview in and play out his snarky standoffish demeanor. It was comical the first few times but now it just seems like a huge tiresome act.
Pop, just answer the damn questions without being so condescending! And TNT, the joke is getting old, give Spolstra some shine!

If I was coaching I would be pissed about the interviews during the game too.

Doris Burk: Pop, What upset you most about the turnovers that led to transition baskets?
Pop: they were turnovers.

come on, what else is he going to say? the turnover its self is the most upsetting part. and she basically answered her own question. the turnovers led to transition baskets

I agree that sometimes he can be a douche and snarky but he does get asked some dumb questions.

post game report: what is the game plan for stopping lebron?
Pop: you want me to tell you our game plan?

I'm sure he is, but it comes off as a same old song and dance routine. I get it it, he doesn't like to talk strategy...let's have another angle

I'm not pointing the finger entirely at Pop, the network should stop embellishing it as well.
I also get the feeling that because it's Pop he gets away with it. If Spoltra interviewed the same way people would call him an idiot.

He's a high functioning sociopath who hates the spotlight. Deal with it.

In game 2:
-What do you want to see in the 4th quarter?
-Lebron playing poorly.

Spoelstra isn't a high functioning sociopath and would correctly be called an idiot in this case.

He would correctly be called an idiot in many other cases as well.

Majority of the questions asked post-game to a coach are pointless so can't blame him.

Yeah he could take a dump in the middle of the court and everybody would be like "oh, Pop! ha ha!"

I don't mind what Pop is doing at all. If I was in his position, I would do the same thing. This is the NBA finals, I would not give out any strategy and info that would give any advantage to the opponent. Questions like " What adjustments are you going to make at the second half or the next game? ".

Do you think Pop would give you the answer?

if you ask popovich a question that he thinks is stupid, he'll slap you with something like "retard please. and they pay you for this shit?" that's probably how he coaches. old school.

Pop cant stand and dont have patience for stupidity, and most questions fall into this category.

He is also not very social person, but he isnt paid to be one, so I dont see any issue here either.

90% of the questions asked to coaches either have completly obvious answers, or they're questions revolving a coaches game plan that Pop would never give away.

First off yes I get that he's being asked dumb questions. But these are standard media questions. Is everyone implying that all other coaches are being asked entirely different questions? He doesn't want to be asked, then don't ask him.

It's probably part of his contract to answer media questions in between quarters (which to me seems very out of place and a feature that Euroleague was wrong to add in the F4).

All other coaches are getting asked the same dumb questions and give the same dumb answers ie "we need to be more aggressive, close them down well, score more points than they do" etc. That they all participate in this circus doesn't make it something other than a circus and frankly these coaches aren't salesmen in a mall. They aren't paid to smile.

Quite honestly the coaches interviews are pretty much all the same. 'How do you stop XY?' 'Oh we've got to work harder, front him, do a better job staying in front of the guy'. blah blah blah. The coaches never actually say anything of substance, because it would take too long to explain and there's no point in giving it away on a broadcast.

So all you end up is pretty much nobody listening to the coaches interview when the game comes back on. Seriously, after halftime, do you actually listen to the coach talking, or do you just think 'shut up so that the ball game goes back to full screen'.

I love Pop as much as any spurs fan, but I agree with the OP. It's funny when it's occasional and spontaneous, not when the media beats it to death.

I never understood the point of sideline interviews in sports anyway. If I were a coach or player, I'd be ticked having to take time out in the middle of competition to answer stupid, redundant questions. I know I am as a fan sitting on my coach sipping green tea.

Ay. I despise the Spurs, but at least Pop gives something beyond the usual boring, phoned-in, cliche-riddled answer. Sports interviews are the biggest waste of time ever.

I love his interviews and the answer he gives. Sit back and listen to some of the questions asked and really think about how you could answer them. Some of them are so ridiculous like they know the answer but they just want to hear it from his mouth or something.

It is annoying at this point. Now it's more schtick than anything else.

Pop could be asked the most insightful and thought provoking question ever and he'd still respond with "Really? That's what you're gonna ask?" It's kinda annoying at this point....dude, you get paid millions of dollars to coach f-cking basketball. You can answer some questions for real....it won't kill ya.

Don't get me wrong...I always thought it was funny too. When it felt real. Now his answers are almost a parody of himself. It's like a schtick he has to do at this point.

Rolando
06-11-2014, 05:22 PM
He is simply focused. To give acceptable answers he would have to break his concentration, turn into a media suck-up whore, and then deliver what is expected. He don't do that.

Dude is a badass.

At least Pop is funny.

You should see his short answers sort of as a protest to the fact that he has to get in front of the camera and answer questions in the middle of a game.

I don't know if all the questions are stupid but they all hold the same answer: that is the team has to be more agressive and/or assertive in the next quarter.

The interviews are pointless. I don't understand why the NBA requires them. They know damn well that none of the coaches will discuss anything worth while. That would be dumb as hell.

Most of the media has already written the article, or at least come up with an outline, by the time the news conferences roll around (the game ended at 10:30 local time last night and the pressers weren't done until ~11:30. Deadlines might be midnight/1am). So they are literally asking questions that get answers that fit the story they already wrote. I have no problem blasting them for this transparent charade.
