Harold Lederman is the man. Larry Merchant is the one to hate.

But dont you agree Rafferty sounds like Lederman?

Yea dude's great. If theres tons of ball on at once, like is the case now, that's one of my determining factors on which game I'm going to watch is the commentators. Where's Len Elmore, Jay Bilas (who usually is teamed with Raftery or Vitale), Brad Daughertry, or Fran Frachilla?

Agreed. It's great listening to that guy in the final moments of a close game.

You know, for the past 2-3 years, I have really liked the way Bill Rafferty has called the games. And this year, he has really made listening to the games fun and interesting. I am still a Dickie V. fan, but I will give Bill his props, the dude is good.

Following are my favorite in order:

Len Elmore
Jay Bilas
Ian Eagle
Gus Johnson

I know I'm missing someone though Rafferty isn't really one of them. I don't mind him but sometimes he can be too stubborn. Elmore and Bilas are so articulate with their points, especially Elmore.

Why does everyone always spell it "Rafferty?"

It's Raftery.

I usually don't like nitpicking on spelling but for some reason this always annoys me, as do Carmello Anthony, Bruce Webber, etc.

Why did CBS break up the Gus Johnson/Bill Raftery partnership?

Brent Mussberger. That's who I forgot.

That drunken idiot is terrible. It's bad enough I have to hear him during football season. I don't really care for Raftery, either. Dude is like 65 and yet he tries to sound like he's 17.

I'm not a big fan of Raftery. His antics wear a little thin with me. For theatrics I like Gus Johnson but for actually commentary I like Bilas and Elmore.

Why did CBS break up the Gus Johnson/Bill Raftery partnership?

Because sometimes really do make the decision on what game to watch based on who's announcing, and I'd say those two bring in a good amount of viewers. Splitting them only makes sense.

As far I'm concerned, Raftery is great. Solid analysis mixed with good entertainment, best of both worlds. Bilas is outstanding with his breakdowns but his smugness does grate on me a bit at times.

For those of you who listen to a game depending on the commentator

Good news: Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery will be CBS' announcing team for the East regional semifinals and final in Boston, according to a release I just got from CBS.

Dick Enberg and Jay Bilas are heading to (suburban) Phoenix for the West regional games, while Gus Johnson and Len Elmore will be in Indianapolis for the Midwest.

Jim Nantz and Clark Kellog will call the South regional games in Memphis, but believe it or not, the original release had Billy Packer's name in place of Kellog's. I figured that couldn't really be the case, but wouldn't it have been something?

Here's the full schedule:

Thursday, March 26

Glendale I: 1. Connecticut vs. 4. Purdue, 7:07 p.m. (Dick Enberg/Jay Bilas)
Boston I: 1. Pittsburgh vs. 4. Xavier, 7:27 p.m. (Verne Lundquist/Bill Raftery)
Glendale II: 2. Memphis vs. 3. Missouri (Dick Enberg/Jay Bilas)
Boston II: 2. Duke vs. 3. Villanova (Verne Lundquist/Bill Raftery)

Friday, March 27

Indianapolis I: 1. Louisville vs. 12. Arizona, 7:07 p.m. (Gus Johnson/Len Elmore)
Memphis I: 2. Oklahoma vs. 3. Syracuse, 7:27 PM (Jim Nantz/Clark Kellog)
Indianapolis II: 2. Michigan State vs. 3. Kansas (Gus Johnson/Len Elmore)
Memphis II: 1. North Carolina vs. 4. Gonzaga (Jim Nantz/Clark Kellog)

Elmore and Bilas are top notch colour commentators.

Gus is becoming a cult hero (lol), but he hasn't stepped his game up this year yet. He should be ready go for the sweet 16.

I remember that game. I cant believe Gonzaga choked. I remember thinking no way they lose this.. Biggest choke job of all time. I don't know how they lost....almost as bad (or good in this case) as Arizona in 2005.

There's a difference between "losing" and having something taken from you by the other team. I'm obviously biased but I never considered that a major choke-job by Arizona except for their last possessions in both regulation and OT.

I'm sorry, I'm thinking about all the ways MSU will dominate Kansas on Friday....What was it you were saying?
Errr, you realize Illinois fans would want that to happen, right? (In my case, it's just because I cheer for most Big Ten schools in the tourney and has nothing to do with Kansas. Unfortunately in a lot of cases, it's because a lot of our fans still cheer against Self, but whatever.)

But considering that Illinifan keeps implying I'm an Illinois fan, it was deserved. lol

I was going to mention the choke job in OT as well. Nice shot selection dumbass. lol

Off topic: You pick up Seth Davis' book about the '79 season?

Off topic: You pick up Seth Davis' book about the '79 season?
No. On top of being a tool I've never thought Davis was a particularly good writer, and it's a topic that's been beaten to death. Most sports books suck and I try my best to find the exceptions to that rule, of which I doubt Davis's book is.

I did read two excellent basketball books in the last few weeks: "The Miracle of St. Anthony" by Adrian Wojnarowski, about St. Anthony High School in New Jersey and coach Bob Hurley. The other was "Seven Seconds or Less" by Jack McCallum, the SI basketball writer, who spent as a season as an "assistant coach" with the Suns. Both of them are a few years old and I finally got around to reading both, and I highly recommend either of them.

I never read sports books so I probably won't get around to those. I just saw really good reviews of Davis' book. Only reason I'm thinking about reading it is because it's MSU. lol

TheGame414
03-24-2009, 02:21 PM
I don't blame you for not reading them because like I said, most of them suck. I still read my fair share of them, though, but I don't bother unless it's a topic of particularly high interest to me or I know the writer is an excellent one, as McCallum and Wojnarowski both are.

And Digger Phelps is an idiot. I really heard him say Purdue isn't a tough or physical team. He's been hating on the Big Ten all year. Get Knight next to him every show to pimpslap him. :pimp:

The way Digger hates on the Big 10, you'd think they murdered his family.

TheGame414
03-28-2009, 03:30 PM
I don't know why anyone cares what Digger Phelps says in the first place. He was a scumbag as a college coach and as an "analyst" he's an absolute clown, a human caricature. Vitale is a caricature too, but at least he has fun with it and realizes it.

As a mod you should delete that post because you've asked that question already. It will always be spelled wrong because of how a fan hears or thinks its pronounced.
