is it even possible to make this argument? I know Kobe will be in the majority I just wanted to know what people think.

You should try reading the forum from time to time then (it's been thoroughly discussed... to death).

this was discussed yesterday and the general consensus is kobe will always be better, you dont even need to bring stats nor accolades if you watched them both play you know it for a fact

Pretty much established that Duncan's been better for a while. Only ones that disagree are Kirby fans..

Another original topic here at ISH!

Fortunately, I can help here. You needn't resort to this "eye test" thing. You merely need to go to the numbers. As you know, I am rather famous for inventing a statistic that summarizes all of the contributions a player can make on the court, the CHUCK or PER (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=324201)™ rating. Admittedly, knowing the answer takes a lot of the fun out of the debate, but sometimes science trumps faith. Anyway, enough chatter.. let's get to the chalkboard!

Kobe: 24374 FGA + 9489 FTA = 33863 CHUCK
TimD: 19074 FGA + 8026 FTA = 27100 CHUCK

or if you prefer PER game:

Kobe: 33863/1245 = 27.2 PER
TimD: 27100/1254 = 21.6 PER

So in this particular case, it's really not very close. Your hypothesis: "Duncan > Kobe" is incorrect.

Warmest regards,

Ayotunde Ndiaye

Duncan > Kobe. That's my opinion.

There is no consensus. Anyone who claims that there is is a troll.

If Kobe rides off into the sunset on a bad team.

Thanks for the info in this thread. I guess it just comes down to what one personally appreciates about basketball and the players who have mastered it.

I personally have Kobe higher due to the fact that he always demolishes spurs in the POs.
But I could see why somebody would have Duncan over Kobe if he wins his fifth championship.
Incredibly close, there can't be a consensus when one player is as close to the other as they are

If Kobe rides off into the sunset on a bad team.

His own fault. Duncan sacrificed money so Spurs can build a competitive team. Kobe takes the highest salary in the NBA, get injured, heals up on company time, then refuses to play out the rest of the season out of embarrassment. Then he has the audacity to criticize the front office for putting together a weak team when it's his fault the Lakers are garbage(pissed off Dwight, choked away any cap flexibility for the Lakers).
