city of Los Angeles will pay $215,000 to end a free-speech lawsuit involving a man who was kicked out of a public meeting after showing up wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood.

Lawmakers voted unanimously Wednesday to settle the lawsuit with Venice resident Michael Hunt, who said city leaders had violated his constitutional rights by ejecting him from a session of the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners in 2011. Hunt, who is black, attended the meeting while wearing both the KKK hood and a T-shirt that featured a profanity and a racial slur used to describe African Americans.

At the 2011 meeting, then-commission president Barry Sanders told Hunt his outfit violated the city's rules of decorum and said Hunt would be ejected if he did not remove the KKK headgear and "offensive signage." Hunt was later escorted out by officers and received a citation saying he had disturbed a public assembly, according to his lawsuit.

The city declined to prosecute and the citation was dismissed. But Hunt, a vendor on the Venice Boardwalk, said he had been wrongfully arrested and accused the city of violating his rights to free speech, assembly and due process by preventing him from speaking at the meeting.

ya I am pretty sure since he got $215,000 he is ok with not being respected for this.

I am just wondering if this is actually a black man who is anti black (eg. he actually got his free speech stopped), or more likely a black man running a scam.

oh the horror

if the guy treats everyday like halloween. I'm pretty sure what you need is to get him a psychiatrist, not give him a fine.

He doesn't have a history as a Klan member. I wonder if the city will counter sue and get him on other charges (tort, deceit, fraud, even extortion) after investigating and other Constitutionist hear of the case. He won't be getting any visas to go abroad anytime soon. I doubt this is over.

Can you imagine how many Klan members are kicking themselves over this. I'm thinking the city will tell him he's been accepted as a honorary member of the Klan and should receive his plaque at their headquarters during the annual fundraising rally.

What?? The guy with KKK hood got $215,000.. AND the city had to pay $600,000 for legal fees for both sides?? LOL. Damn, so the lawyers get their big money and the prosecutor got his money for ignorance. All from tax money.. No wonder the country is in heavy debt and Los Angeles is basically broke..

:facepalm :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

What's the scam? Meetings like these are supposed to be an exchange of ideas. This actually highlights the left's fervent attempt to suppress any speech or ideas that run contrary to what they want to see enforced upon the entire country.

If people are not being physically disruptive, why the **** shouldn't they be able to represent whatever the hell they want? What if this guy was wearing a turban and was thrown out? Do you know how many outraged liberals would be flooding the internet crying about bigoted conservatives?!?!

This guy obviously knew what he was doing and I'm sure he created this stir on purpose, but I say BRAVO. This highlights the fact that people would rather suppress any ideas that will offend THEM instead of having a free exchange of ideas and beliefs in a reasonable fashion. If this guy was simply waiting his turn to make his statement, who GAF what he was wearing? People are just waaitttinnggggg to be offended these days. By anything. "Ooooh, let me get offended so I can jump up and down and get attention for being offended! It'll be my 15 minutes in the spotlight and I'll look soooo superior, oooh yeahhh"

Only thing that sucks is his award comes from the taxpayers. It should come out of the pockets of the officials who had him removed.

Who gives a shit what he's ok with. He wasn't trying to make a point about freedom of speech or expression, he's just a piece of shit who did it for the money because he knows the american legal system is broken. It baffles me that people win frivolous cases like this:facepalm

The settlement is not Hunt's first victory over the city. He previously received a $264,286 jury award stemming from a 2009 lawsuit in which he challenged the city's vending restrictions on the Venice Boardwalk. The city also paid Hunt's lawyer $340,000 in legal fees for that case.

I also dislike hunt, and believe he was running a scam.
With that said I am almost a freedom of speech absolutist. The one exception I make is yelling fire in a crowded building.

You should be allowed to wear offensive clothes on government property.
