Spurs were coasting on their own steam in the beginning of the playoffs. It took going down 2-1 to the Mavs to wake them up.

SA is great team but by no means a perfect team,
they had problems against ibakaless/injured ibaka OKC (yes i know he played the last 3 games)
dallas took em to 7
they swept inexperienced portland team (who anti climax after beating rocket),
and a mess up version of okc
the heat are just decent team in very weak conference
they also got outplayed last year, if not for manu played like shit, and those miracle in game 6

Good response headass.
they had size inside with wright and dalembert, athelticism with monta ellis and devin harris, great spacing with dirk, and elite shooting with carter, harris, caulderon, dirk, and etc. they basically mimicked the spurs's offense and played great defense too.
but they weren't deep enough which was why they were blown out.

Dallas is a good team, Dirk is still a great player and they got some underrated players like Calderon. Also VC was playing his best basketball in 5 or 6 years.
Matchup and timing. The same thing happened to the '08 Celtics. They had back to back 7 game series against a 37 win Hawks and a 45 win Cavs, but defeated a 59 win Pistons and 57 win Lakers in 6.

Dirk played out of his mind. I felt bad for him because he played awesome.

1. Rick Carlisle is the only coach in the league who can outcoach Pop.
2. Dirk is 2nd GOAT PF.

The Mavs were peaking at the right time. The Mavs can score with anyone. The West is way better than the East (Duh!). And the Mavs and Spurs always get up for each other. They've been battling each other for years, they play in the same state, just a good old rivalry.
And last but not least Carlisle.

Rick Carlisle.
Having a good coach is the single most underrated factor in the NBA.

b/c the Mavs play very good team ball and Rick Carlisle is a great coach.
to sum it up:
- their 2 stars in dirk/monta played great
- great coaching
- good role players who stepped up like Harris, VC, and Blair.
give this team a legit starting C and one good defender in the back court and they are dark horse contenders

The Mavs played some great basketball. Also the Spurs bench took a while to get going in that series.

Mavs are underrated on this forum and we didnt realize how shit the east was
WCF was the the real finals.
To bad Ibaka was injured could have been an epic match up
East was total shit, I honestly think the Mavs would have been at least the 3rd seed in the east

This Spurs team was a lot like the 2011 Mavs team.
That Mavs team was good but not great but that comeback win by Portland when Brandon Roy just took over completely shook the Mavs and they responded by playing their best ball ever.
Similarly, this Spurs team sleep walked into the playoffs and were given a nasty wake up call by a very underrated and well coached team. Spurs woke up and got it rolling. The rest is history.

What's even more surprising about that series is that they did it with Dirk, who they relied on heavily, not playing very well. Shot 48 TS% and his defense didn't look very good.

If it wasn't for the Blair suspension, the series could have been even closer.

How the hell did Atlanta take Boston to 7 in 2008?
How the hell did Houston take LA to 7 in 2009?

I think you are lowballing here, the mavs get atleast the second spot in the east and very good chance for the 1st.

Miami would beat 2-8 in the West. Only San Antonio has the right matchups to beat them.

-2nd best coach in the NBA in Carlisle(and Carlisle ended up outcoaching Pop for most of the series)
-None of the star-studded teams gave the Spurs much trouble(OKC, Miami) but Dallas did. Probably cause they're a surprisingly deep team too. Dallas bench outplayed Spurs bench. Got some great production from Carter, Harris, Blair, etc
-Monta outplayed Parker for most of the series(except for game 7)
-Dallas had the 3rd best offense in the reg season but only the 22nd best defense. SA didn't expect that Carlisle would have them playing good defense in the playoffs. Came out of nowhere and surprised Pop and the Spurs.

I consider this an asterisk championship between the Spurs needed so much help from the officiating crew and league office to get past Dallas.
