I can't disagree with that as much as I want to see Bird higher. Fact is that's right where he should be.

I've always had Wilt in my top 5 by default, but the more I think about it the less I want to keep him there. Duncan's title bumps up him a spot, I don't think he's top 5. 7th, 6th max. This puts him above Bird IMO but I still have Shaq ahead.

Magic played against better competition and won the same amount of rings
Kobe played against better competition and won the same amount of rings while having a 4-2 series advantage (4-1 prime for prime) against Duncan's spurs.
Wilt pure domination, but he doesn't have a case
Shaq dominated the spurs, probably the greatest peak ever, one of the greatest longevities ever

You still have to give him credit for winning, even if the balanced makeup of the team only required 16/9 from him in this playoff run. Not a huge boost, but enough for him to go up a spot past Bird IMO.

Because, you silly Kobe stan, he deserves a lot of credit for showing how good and consistent he still is, even at age 38. He was the best player for the Spurs last year in the playoffs, and he was the most consistent Spur this year still.

He's one of the 5 greatest to ever play the game, IMO.

Duncan's 2014 ring at 38 y/o is more deserving than Kobe's 2000 ring when he only played 4 full games out of the possible 6 Finals games.

For me, I always struggled with 6-8. Always found difficulty with properly ranking Duncan, Wilt, and Shaq. And, though this championship doesn't weigh as much as his titles amidst his prime, neither did Shaq's last one or Wilt's.

So for me, someone who always fluctuated between the three? This definitely cements his place for me above Shaq and Wilt.

If by 'third' you mean a clear top 2, and arguably the best. Only guy on the team to average a double double, and he wasn't in foul trouble like Kawhi.

Duncan:
15.4 ppg / 10 reb / 2.5 ast / .4 stl / .8 blk / 2.4 to / 2.4 fl
56.9 fg% / 67.9 ft%
33 mins

Kawhi:
17.8 ppg / 6.4 reb / 2.5 ast / 1.6 stl / 1.2 blk / 1.8 to / 4.4 fl
61.2 fg% / 57.9 3pt% / 78.3 ft%
33 mins

Not surprised it took about 1 minute for people to use the FMVP against Duncan, like they do with Bird.

My updated list:

MJ
Kareem
Russell
Wilt
Duncan
Magic
Bird
Shaq
Kobe
Hakeem

Duncan passes Magic by tying him in titles now (already had tied him in FMVP) and passed lots of his longevity records for the playoffs. He'll end up 1 MVP shy but I don't put a ton of stock into MVPs when you've got guys like Nash with as many as Duncan and as many as Shaq & Kobe combined.

Defensive anchor for a team that equalized Miami so tremendously on offense that they failed to score 100 ONCE this Finals. The same Miami offense that has been so efficient and proliferate. Didn't score 100 once.

Top 10 in DWS this year
Top 5 in DWS last year, and top 3 in DPOY voting

This has been one of TD's most efficient playoff runs as well.

It's not about being the "____ best player." His impact has been tremendous these last two seasons, and a intricate part to the Spurs success in getting to the Finals these last two seasons.

mj bird and magic shouldn't be "surpassable", their impact on the game of basketball cannot be measure by stats or accolades. they are literally the standard to which all current nba players compare themselves to.

a tier below them is kobe, duncan, shaq, etc.

and a couple tiers below that is samaki walker, chris childs, and javale mcgee

then bran

jk. but still my first point stands. mj bird and magic are out of reach.

Duncan's 2014 ring at 38 y/o is more deserving than Kobe's 2000 ring when he only played 4 full games out of the possible 6 Finals games.

Well you have to take into account that the Lakers were a two man team and weren't very talented outside of their duo.

Phil Jackson on the 2000 Lakers: "we were far from being the most talented team in the league. Indiana, Portland, Phoenix, Sacramento, and New York were all ball clubs whose top eight or nine players had more talent than we had in our regular rotation." And in the 2000 WCF's vs the Portland, the Lakers were called "two deep" in comparison to the Blazers were called "too deep."

Kobe wasn't truly elite yet in 2000, but he was still a top 10 player and the best SG/two way perimeter player in the league. Duncan is absolutely a key part for the Spurs at 38, but I don't think it's unfair to say at this point of his career he is more of a role player. Kobe was the Lakers facilitator/play-maker, defensive stopper, 2nd scoring option, and the go to guy in the clutch. He had to set up the offense, advance the ball, read the defense and consistently make big plays at critical times and also usually defend the other teams' best swing man.

Now I don't think his '00 rings is a meaningful as his other 4, that championship is similar to Pippen's on the 3-peat Bulls teams, 2012 Wade or 1995 Drexler IMO. It's true Kobe was playing injured in the Finals that year and missed most of game 2 and sat out game 3 after Jalen Rose admitted intentionally injured him. But Kobe came up with a legendary clutch performance in game 4, and his defense on Mark Jackson was impressive throughout the series, reminiscent of Pippen's defense on Jackson in the 1998 conference finals just two years ago and although not a very efficient, he did put up a solid all around performance 26/10/4/2/1 with only 1 turn over playing excellent defense in the clinching game 6. Also, it shouldn't be forgotten how big Kobe came through in the clutch in the other playoff rounds either, especially Game 7 vs Portland, and his production in the first 3 rounds prior to the Finals was right there with his regular season.
