View Full Version : Why does Duncan move up the All-time list this year...

but not last year?

Duncan was better last year than he was this year. If people are saying he's Top 5 (I don't have a problem with putting him here), then he should have been Top 5 last year regardless of the Spurs not winning the title.

So this year he plays at a lower level, gets outplayed by a teammate and doesn't win the FMVP. But since he has a better team this time around he moves up?

I guess people really do overrate winning...

Or are accolades just that important when it comes to All-time lists that u basically disregard level of play. I mean if he put up 24/12 against OKC and lost, does that mean he was worse than how he actually played this year??

Am I way off base here or not? :confusedshrug:

Championships have a-lot to do with it. That's one of the reasons why he gets the nod over Malone for greatest PF ever. If he hadn't won it this year, he most likely wouldn't have moved up on anybody's list.

Anybody who watch the Spurs know that the system is built around Duncan. When things start to break down, they resort to getting the ball to Duncan in the post.

Duncan was much better player last season making all NBA first team. The Spurs were just the greater team this season compared to 2013.

Very much the same as Bean in 00, except, Duncan actually was the best player on his team.

Not off point OP, I pretty much agree with this. I said this last night too.

But if anything, both years should move him up with last year being a better year and more impactful. Winning indeed is a bigger crutch for these arbitrary lists.

Duncan has no "memorable/epic" moments in this championship run, let alone any of his 5.

While Duncan didn't win as the man, you know damn well that if Kobe's old ass as a roll player wins a 6th ring, Kobe fvcktards would be playing up his ring count. So let's cut straight though the bullshit right now and apply that same logic to Duncan.

You stans are hilarious. Out of position h2h stats, eye test, cultural impact, and now "moments".

Duncan > Bean

Duncan > Bean

And if you use the eye test, it's actually close but Duncan is still > Bean and Jordan is still > than both. The difference is that Kobe tried his hardest to surpass Jordan, and Duncan was just so fundamentally sound and great, that it simply came to him to get as close to Jordan as he could.

Because when you talk about moving up in the Top 10, it requires championships, period.

And last year did enhance Duncan's legacy. This guy is fukcing unbelievable to be having this type of impact at his age. Only rivaled in NBA history by the great Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

I believe the methods used to rank a player's abilities can be a little silly. That Ray Allen shot last year ended up being a great manner with which to convey the downside to the "championships" argument. A miracle shot suddenly hurts one player's standing (Duncan's) while boosting another (James') all while neither player did anything differently.

It is always tough for me to support the rings angle in a team sport. Tim Duncan earned a ring this year, but in large thanks to exquisite team execution for which he was but one piece.

Malone isn't even in the same discussion with Duncan. Duncan is a top 10 all time. Malone is the 4th best PF of all time. Barkley Duncan and Kevin Mchale are/were better than Malone.

He doesn't move up. His 5th ring was like KAJ last title, a good role - player ring, not an fmvp-ring

So Duncan is also very unappreciated in my opinion much like Kareem. Kareem basically had the most unstoppable move in the history of basketball. Won on all level's of basketball, multiple championships, amazing stats etc, yet he gets thrown by the wayside in most people's top 5 discussions. I'd build a team around Kareem before Jordan. People seem to like shooting guards over the slow methodical pace of a post game.

KAJ and TD are both great, But Cap is a GOAT CANDIDATE, TD "just" a top 10

:oldlol: at "role-player" ring and not having "iconic" moments.

He's still the defensive anchor and best player on the team. You Kobe stans are something else.

I guess that's what happens when you lack self esteem and male role models so you have to look for any possible way to defend your rapist-hero who doesn't know you exist

kawhi and splitter are at least as good defensively and he's not even top 3 offensively. op is right. people are moving duncan up for essentially being a good role-player. can't believe people are putting him in the top 5. :oldlol:
