In a recent interview with Sam Borden of The New York Times Magazine, Klinsmann used Bryant's recent $48.5 million contract extension to defend his decision to cut longtime men's national team staple Landon Donovan just weeks before the start of the World Cup:
"This always happens in America. Kobe Bryant, for example

Kobe's already replied to it tactfully.

Kobe's contract is tricky. He brings so much to the team, but his production isnt there anymore.

Will Kobe make the playoffs next year?
Can they beat out either Memphis or Dallas, or for that matter Phoenix (which has enough cap space to add another rotation player)?

Playoffs? Nah, I think the Lakers are done unless they get a top ten player in free agency. Which is possible but unlikely with the lack of current trust in the organization.

If they got Melo and bring back Gasol, and Bryant and Nash are healthy all season long, then that team could get back in. But those are a lot of ifs.

If you don't think the team can win a ring there's nothing wrong with killing the cap to honor a guy that's played such a big role for 5 rings. Just don't expect any more until after he retires.

How good are a healthy Gasol, Bryant and Nash? We have no idea, and neither do free agents. :confusedshrug:

i see the suns making the playoffs but i dont see the grizz or dallas making it.....dallas a year older...grizz organization has been dwindling since they fired hollins...true gasol was hurt last season but they definitely didnt look as good as they did in 13 even when gasol came back healthy.

Kobe's response was tactful but bullshit. He deserves $50+ million, because he's going to generate MORE then that for the Lakers next year. This is a business first. He's a large reason why they got that billion dollar+ deal from Time Warner, his jersey sales, merchandising, National TV coverage, selling tickets, etc. Having Kobe on your roster keeps your business profitable as you rebuild.

Why do people talk about how Kibe makes moneyfor the Lakers but not about how much money they make him? You think Kibe would have made all that endorsement money playing for a tight-fisted midwestern organization that never ponies up to be able to compete? Kibe needs the Lakers MORE than they need him. If he'd stayed in Charlotte the Lakers would still be the Lakers, and Kibe Bryant would be Tmac.
The Lakers dont "owe" Kibe anything at the expense of the team. They can reward him after his career with a small % of the franchise or a position in the organization etc. The idea of paying this dude way more money than hes worth when it hurts them competitively is such bullshit, and only a mindlessly idiotic and beta stanbase would actually defend it.

He makes a good point, but I dont think the two cases are comparable. Donovan is like 32 right now, still at the end of his prime and can play for 2-3 years. Kobe is 36, hes washed up already and even the Lakers front office knows that. The reason why Kobe got a huge contract was that they wish to sell tickets with Kobe, even in his current condition Kobe is still gonna bring you a good amount of money.

Firstly business doesn't work like that.No matter how greatly an individual has contributed to it's success, they won't give that person money just to honour him for what he has done in the past...They may not expect any more team success until he retires, but they're paying him so much money because he keeps bringing them back multiple amounts of money and that is financial success.
Secondly your point here is flawed in it's basis, because Kobe himself isn't ok with just sticking around just to keep milking them checks....He keeps playing because he wants that sixth ring. That's why it is so confusing to see him not taking a paycut so his team can be more competitive, thus helping him win the championship again...
