Nice. I used to wait tables at a lot of places. Sonny's, Cracker Barrel, etc. Are you going to be a teacher? I always thought being a teacher would be so rewarding and fun. Kids are great.

I like my job, I had no serving experience prior to the job I have, so when they offered to train me I was really grateful. It pays well and I enjoy the people I work with, plus it's great social interaction for when I don't have a lot going on.

I want to be a teacher, short term high school English, and I do enjoy working with young people too. But long term I wanna teach College, probably some form of literature.

Why are you single? Choice or women don't like you?

Try POF or some dating sites if you have issues talking to girls. I met my GF on yahoo chat. I have a lot of acne scarring, so I got a girl to like me for who I was before I met her.

not by choice. But i never had the time and willingness to look for one. I was so concentrated on myself for so long. I'm actually pretty used to it now and all my friends around me are all in relationships, it seems like such a pain in the ass. I have no commitments, no burdens, etc. Not to mention, all the money i get to keep.

You'd better. That's actually pretty galling IMO that this guy would move his gf into a shared apartment and not even mention adjusting THEIR rent. Definitely let him know what's up. Or, at the very least, insist on use of his girlfriend.

1-it's a woolstore/warehouse style apartment so it's pretty massive.

2-Australia is expensive. I know. It still sounds ridiculous but if you've lived here, you'd understand. I have zero debt.

3-when I moved in, I was in a time crunch of about a week from my previous place and this was honestly the best offer at the time. Otherwise it would have meant moving my shit into storage and then waiting three weeks until I got back, stayed in a hotel and then tried to find a place. He offered me the room on the spot when he showed it to me, no bullshit interview or "I'll let you know." I honestly didn't have time to spare. And moving/finding a new place is stressful especially if you work in the field.

Interesting, I didn't realize Australia was particularly expensive to live in. In which city do you dwell? Is the quality of women in the area worth the expense?

Yeah, she's cool and he's cool but I asked the other roommate when I returned from the field if she had officially moved in and I said, "ummm so shouldn't our rent go down?"

Obviously my other roommate isn't too smart in that category. Cool guy though that I want to continue to hang with.

I'm not really hurting for money and I'm pretty laid back so I decided I'd just leave it until I come back from vacation.

Yeah, I dig it. To me the biggest thing wouldn't be about him moving her in, as much as doing it without the courtesy of consulting the others that live there, especially if you're all paying equal shares of the rent. Kind of an audacious thing to do, but whatever.

It's an island dude. Shampoo is $10.00. Plus the min wage is like $25.00. So everything just goes up. Hard for businesses to operate here. Universal healthcare may actually go away as it's expensive (no shit). Citizens may have to start paying $5-7 per visit for shit like colds and earaches.

The women are hotter as they are in most cities in the US but their attitudes and intelligence are pretty on par with American women. They may be a little more open minded but they're heavily influenced by the American female.

I'm in Brisbane.

Sorry for the shitty English/sentence structure. I'm on my iPad.

Yeah you're totally right. I did have an issue with that and when I moved in, I sensed it moving in that direction. I just don't do the dishes.

Would've bothered me more in the past but petty stuff like that, as long as the gf is cool, doesn't bother me anymore.

Looking to move out though for sure. I really hate not being able to look outside.

4 figs a month to rent is doing nothing but hurting you. For that price you could be chipping away at a mortgage. I understand you're in Australia right now, but that's still a lot of cash to a) not own and b) share with 3 others.

Hopefully you're getting paid like 2-3x what you'd be making in the US otherwise you're just throwing money out the window.

Truly some amazing accomplishments, guys. I give all the glory to Jesus, but to each their own.

Hotbullets - Congratulations on the master's degree. Truly a great feat, especially when all I could muster was a high school diploma equivalent. I know it takes a lot of work and dedication.

Bandito - Thanks for serving our country.

Stuckey - Congratulations on the marriage and teaching career. Not to sound soft, but it was always my dream to be married and have a family. I also think teaching is a wonderful career.

christian1923 - Seton Hall is a baller school. LeDAMN.

Velocirap31 - New car? Girlfriend? Engineer? LeDAMN. Baller ish.

Anyhow, there are a lot more of you that are doing your thing, too. I saw one dude was a dentist. Dentistry is no joke and a very respectable and sometimes stress career. Kudos. Lebowsky with three college degrees. Damn. So many more.

I'm truly honored to be in the presence of such hard working and talented individuals. As noted, I am not "successful" the way most of you are. Rough childhood. Sexual abuse. No dad. Typical trailer trash story. However, I am blessed with a beautiful 15 month old daughter whom I adore and have the fortune of raising. I have my health. I have my physical health. I have family. I try to count my blessings.

Don't really see the value in buying a house while I'm here in Australia. The real estate here is on another level...if I wanted to buy in my area it'd be in the millions I bet. I don't want to move to the burbs where it'd be cheaper (still 300k+ if I'm lucky). I'm also on a 4 year visa and I don't know if I'll be in Australia the rest of my life. If I were to leave Australia, it's not 100% that the company would buy my house and if they didn't I would have **** all time to sell it as my visa would be cancelled pretty quickly. Again, an extra headache I'd like to avoid.

I've never seen the value of buying a home like others do. Seems like a hassle. If I need to move somewhere else, I could do it in a day. If I buy a house, then I have to fill it with more bullshit, spend days off working on it etc. I'd rather be doing something else. Just because buying a house is "what you're supposed to do" doesn't mean you should do it. I feel like young people get trapped into that shit especially in America.

Sure, I could move back to the US and buy a house but honestly what is accomplished. Yay, you bought a house in the burbs in Texas. I wonder what's going on this Friday night, Margs and appetizers at chilis? Sounds great.

The main reason to buy a home is simply financial. Youre investing, rather than simply spending. You never get a return on the rent you pay. When youre young its definitely more convenient to rent and it just depends on what you value at a given point, convenience or doing whats technically more financially sound. Obviously if you have a family and so forth you might want a home for other reasons but when youre young the main reason for doing it would be because simply renting a place you dont own over time is a colossal waste of money. But youre right that is saves on a lot of headaches and so the tradeoff really depends on each persons preferences.

i don't have many regrets in life but this is one of them. you are young, i applaud you for living abroad. you really get a better understanding of the world. just going on vacation 3-4 weeks at a time isn't good enough, you have to actually live there. i'm actually thinking about moving to singapore, but work is just too good here for me right now..

It's an investment, when your renting in major cities in Australia your paying off someone elses mortgage. For example I bought my house 5 years ago and in that time it has already gone up 150k in value. If I were to rent it out the rent is $50 less than my mortgage repayments are. I get if your planning on moving and temporarily here but renting when your rent is almost equal to home repayments doesn't make sense to me.

Great car. Rented one while my car was in the shop a few months ago. If I was to buy a compact SUV right now, it'd definitely be in my top 3.

Yeah my Dad's got the rav4 and I borrow that when I need the space. Thinking of trading in my corolla so he can get a kluger and I'll take his rav4, either that or I'll just trade mine in towards a rav4 myself. His is a 2013 I think.

That is crazy good.

My father and I have always hated renting for that reason. We basically ended up buying houses as we settled here (we came here as immigrants with $5k debt and nothing else) and just rented them out as we moved on. I think I mentioned in another thread that I had to recently upgrade and have my parents with me due to their health, and as a result I now have three houses. The two I'm renting out are taken care of with the rent (mortgage, interest, HOA fees, taxes, all included) with a little bit left over to put back in the mortgage principle. A year from now if the market climbs back up I'll probably sell one of them.

It can be a hassle, but it can really pay off if you're smart and put some thought into it.

I still have it, don't know what i'm going to do with it.

you pay $2100 per month for rent for a 2 bedroom apartment?

your job must be paying you good
Well, I used to live with my fiance. She would put in like 500 a month, but now I'm splitting that with a friend of mine.

My job pays about 85-90K a year, plus a little bit of commission and minor side businesses.

If you're in a financially sound place, see yourself living there for the next 5-10 years, and don't overextend yourself, you'd be f*cking just plain stupid to continue to rent. Right now you're paying someone else's mortgage. When you rent, 0% of what you spend is recoverable. It's gone. Why the F would you do that if you could be paying yourself?
