-lebron was already a better all-around player in 2006 (and took his team farther in the playoffs); wade had one of the greatest playoff runs ever; dirk and lebron both had better advanced stats (in the playoffs too, same with duncan); meanwhile kobe quit in game 7 and choked a 3-1 series lead WITHOUT the suns' second best player :facepalm
-in 2007, lebron took a mediocre cast coached by mike brown into the finals. nuff said
-lebron took the same celtics team kobe got ousted in 6 by, to 7 games, having a better playoff game than kobe ever has
top 3 since 2006 (shaq, duncan have been better than kobe every year before 2006)

He won those 2 years after winning MVP

MVP
2FMVP

Lebron was still a loser then

yes Kobe was better

kobe went to 3 straight finals. also in 06' everyone was praising kobe's game. in 07' duncan was the best player in the league (neither kobe or bran) and we all know who it is from 08'-10'.
in 03' it was obviously kobe, 04' kobe again, bran could possibly have 05' (i'd have to look into it) but i've already explained the rest.
so from the time bran came into the league
03' - kobe
04' - kobe
05' - bran
06' - kobe
07' - actually duncan (but bran can get it for making the finals and being swept :lol )
08' - kobe
09' -kobe
10' - kobe
but i'm just talking about vs bran though. when we factor in other players i'd say kobe was the best player (in terms of pure basketball skills and being the better individual player than the rest)

I got Kobe for 08 as well, but there is no chance he was a better individual basketball player than kobe was in 09 and 10.. just none.
LeBron offered more. From scoring, to playmaking, rebounding, defense, efficiency, stats across the board, advanced stats, mvp's, doing more with less, etc.

If Lebron can win 66 games in regular season, he should be able to win games in the playoffs. Yal make exucses like he had the worst teammates. Lebron been the best 12 13 and 14

what dont you get?:facepalm
Years you can say Kobe was clearly the best:
2006 - I don't think anyone else had a case this year. Kobe took his game to another level. Unbelievable historical individual feats, and his team overachieved, too. Phil asked Kobe to carry the team until they learned the triangle, and they ended up with 45 wins in what might be the most stacked conference in the history of the league despite that, and not much of a cast outside of Odom who was very inconsistent and didn't play like an All-Star until the second half of the year.
2007- Not as clear as '06 since I don't think he was quite as good, though he was close. This is the 2nd year in a row that I thought Kobe was clearly the best in the game. Duncan does have a case in hindsight, but I'm sticking with what I thought back then.
2008 - This year is clear. Kobe played his best basketball from an all around standpoint, his best defensive season since the 3-peat, his best job as a facilitator/play-maker ever, still a deadly scorer and he rebounded very well for a guard and this was his most mature, unselfish and intelligent ball. It's right up there with '06 as his best season. Literally every player in the league, coach, past legend, baksetball analyst etc. that mentioned about someone being the best player it was Kobe that season. The Lakers were 25-11 early at the time of Bynum's injury, Kobe kept them going until they got Gasol, then Gasol was injured and he kept them going and they ended up with the best record in one of the most competitive conferences ever. Kobe's balance between getting his teammates involved early and taking over later was reminiscent of Michael Jordan that season.
Years that you can argue he was the best:
2009- He was at least top 3. He has a case for top 2 behind LeBron, or even best player again, but I'd go with LeBron and Wade as the top 2.
2010- At least #2 behind LeBron. Wade's laziness allowed Kobe to get back to top 2 comfortably, and LeBron's quit/choke job against Boston was enough for lot of fans to have Kobe as the best m after winning a 5th ring and 2nd Finals MVP, but I still give the slight edge to James despite that) 2001- Shaq was the best, but it's worth mentioning after that postseason run the general consensus was that Kobe and Shaq were nearly neck-and-neck.

IN THE REGULAR SEASON: bron did more with less...
and how can you not blame him for doing so in the playoffs?
he averaged 35/9/7 through 3 rounds while his cast when ghost... and kobe was supposed to be better?
In 2010 LeBron had one of the greatest seasons ever, averaging the highest APG of any non PG in history...
30 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists... another 1st seed with no all stars.
you dont honestly think kobe was a better basketball player do you?

How people can call Kobe the best player in the league in 03 I will never know.
From a pure statistical/impact standpoint, he has no case over Duncan. The guy wasn't even necessarily better than Shaq (so the Lakers had two of the three best players in the league) and they still couldn't get out of the first round.
Kobe has a case for 06, but he really underperformed in the Playoffs. His best case is 08.

Kobe came through when it mattered most though. LeBron QUIT.
I always take the playoffs into account as well as the mental game and overall game (footwork, jumper, post game, overall impact, etc.) when deciding the best player, not just stats. That's why Kobe was the best for 5 straight seasons, 05-06 until 09-10. Kobe almost beat the Suns with a much worse supporting cast than any of LeBron's (Mo Williams > Smush Parker and Jamison was equal to Odom then and people like Luke and Kwame Brown were much worse than Varejao and Z), won two rings as "the man", and his game winners alone brought the team from an 8th seed to a 1st seed in 09-10. LeBron wasn't even close until 08-09. Basketball is a mental game too, which Kobe clearly has the edge over LeBron in. Kobe did anything BUT quit against Boston in 09-10 while being DOWN, while LeBron quit against them while being TIED. LeBron never truly became the best player until the lockout season, which is ironically when he matured and developed SOME alpha mentality such as the last three games against Indiana in 2012, Boston in game 6 and game 7 against the Spurs in 2013. The closest he came to that before was in 2007 against Detroit...
So yeah, Kobe was the best player in the league, for five seasons.

10' - fmvp Disagree with 2001 and 2003, Shaq and Kobe were pretty close to equal after the playoffs, but Shaq was still clearly the most dominant player in the league. The consensus was that Shaq was the best, but later into the '01 season when Kobe matured, and after the playoffs the consensus was that Kobe was the next best player in the league. But I also can't ignore that Kobe was playing selfishly early during the '01 season. Also, for the '01 regular season Shaq should have won MVP over Iverson. I'm aware Shaq called Kobe the "best player in the world" during the '01 WCF, but Shaq says a lot of things...he said Hakeem was still better than him when they faced each other in the '99 playoffs and remember how he was taking down Kobe and talking up Wade when he went to Miami? Shaq also said in '08 that Amar'e was better than KG. Teammates often hype each other. Jordan called Scottie the MVP in '96 and said the Bulls were still his team. 2003 he was top 5, but it was a ridiculously good top 5 that year so that's no slight on Kobe. I have him just behind Duncan, Shaq and KG... Kobe and T-Mac are a toss up. I won't argue with 2006-2010 though.

So, LeBron "quit/choked" in '10, but Kobe didn't in '06?
For me, LeBron took over as the clear cut best player from 2010 onwards,
Wade was in the mix for 09, along with Kobe, 08, his MVP year I don't think that LeBron had a case, I will give you the debate in 07, but Kobe was still better.
This has already been done to death. Lets just agree to disagree.

Feels like you wanna do the "10 onwards" just for the purpose of it being a new decade/era.. because honestly, the gap was bigger in 09 :confusedshrug:

Not taking anything away from Kobe but Gasol missed 10 games when he was injured and LA went 5-5 during that span. When he was in the starting line-up, LA went 22-5
And they had the #1 seed in the West even before the Gasol trade.

I didn't list 09 as a year that Kobe was the best, as Wade, Kobe and Bron were all in the mix, a case can be made for all 3 of them.

Bam, 2 fine cases right there... In the RS he posted better all-around stats too, with higher advanced statistics CROSS THE BOARD.
im ok with people calling kobe the best player in 08. just but be consistent. what did kobe do that lebron didnt in 07 or 06? he didnt have better stats...he didnt take his team further in the playoffs...so what is it?
some arbituary bullshit like "skills"?
when it comes to individual players:

Too inefficient, other players can put up the same numbers if they were selfish enough to shoot the shots

Kobe should have won the 2006 MVP for those three reasons: trapped on a lousy Lakers team, Kobe dragged them to 45 wins by averaging 41.0 minutes, 27 shots, 10 free throw attempts and 35.4 points; he also made 45 percent of his shots and finished with a 28.0 PER and 15.3 win shares. That

And they had the #1 seed in the West even before the Gasol trade.
That was with Bynum.
Doesn't change the fact that LA was 5-5 w/o Gasol during his injury and 22-5 with him in the starting line-up.

Honestly though, Kobe has a pretty decent case for being the best player from 2005-2008.
He was doing so crazy stuff in that 2005/2006 season.

From 01-2011 Kobe was the best player in the league.
In that period...
4 rings
6 finals appearances
2 fmvps
1 Mvp
3 all star mvps
2 scoring titles
over 100 40 point games... scored 81in that stretch
Olympic Gold
Show me a player that's been better during this time period.... I'll be here waiting :coleman:

You can't use a chunk of time as your argument.
That's like saying Tim Duncan has been the best player in the league every year between 1999-2014 because of his accomplishments over those 15 years. It's stupid.
IMO the best player chart since 2000 is something like:
2000-2003: Shaq
2003-2005: Duncan
2005-2008: Kobe
2008-2014: Lebron
Theres no way a 45% shooter can ever be considered best in the league
Too inefficient, other players can put up the same numbers if they were selfish enough to shoot the shots
Uh, Kobe's efficiency has always been excellent given his usage and volume. The league average for SG's is around 42-43%, Kobe hovered around 45-47% for most of his career. The truth is Kobe being inefficient over his career is a myth. He has always been efficient relative to league average, even in most of his highest-volume shooting seasons. In fact, he had excellent efficiency over his prime. He was at a excellent +3-4% relative to league average TS% from 2001-2009. That's as good as the "efficiency God" Dwayne Wade or 2nd 3-peat Jordan. At no point in his career has Kobe been under league average efficency and he takes many last second shots.
08 is really not even debatable. 06 and 07 very strong case. Thus it safe to conclude 2006-2008 was the kobe bryant era. Very close to the top in many other seasons including the two following years

-in 2007, lebron took a mediocre cast coached by mike brown into the finals. nuff said
-lebron took the same celtics team kobe got ousted in 6 by, to 7 games, having a better playoff game than kobe ever has
top 3 since 2006 (shaq, duncan have been better than kobe every year before 2006)
06: lebron, wade, kobe
07: lebron, kobe, dirk
08: lebron, kobe, paul
09: lebron, wade, kobe
10: lebron, kobe, wade
11: lebron, wade, howard
12: lebron, durant, paul
13: lebron, durant, paul
