View Full Version : What makes Brent Barry so...disregarded?

Not as a player...I mean as a person.
I watch him on Open court and everytime he opens his mouth, there's usually silence. Not the silence of "hey I wanna listen to this guy carefully" but more of the awkward silence of "dude stop talking already".
Anyone else feel the same vibe?

Jon Barry is the voice of all casual NBA fans who just started watching basketball 3 years ago.

Not sure. I notice Steve Smith can go an entire episode without saying more than a couple sentences tho.
Watch the Dr. J one? That's "hey I wanna listen to this guy carefully" if I have ever seen it.

Brent Barry/Grant Hill/Steve Kerr are the three best on Open Court.

Jon Barry is, bar none, the worst commentator in the history of basketball.
Brent Barry is ALWAYS trying to make a self depracating joke, he never actually goes after anyone else like the other guys. But I mean, most of the panel seems to like him.
They like Smitty too, but he seems introverted.

Bingo. Tony Parker had sex with his wife. He's never been the same since.

I didn't mean most of the panel didn't like him. Of course they all like each other in general.
I should say the vibe in more detail...it's more of "we don't really wanna hear you talk. But you're here and I guess we have to so lets get it over with."

They love Smitty because they know him pretty well. Smitty was far, far from introverted on the basketball court. I don't wanna say everything he does is an act, but he isn't always the quiet dude he is on the show. He was an obnoxious, loud trash talking ****er who was good enough to back it up (though not like Bird, MJ, Kobe, etc) in games. Brent Barry worded it well, "when Smitty makes a jumper, he'll let you know about it". He's definitely become really mature and composed off the court, but all those guys in Open Court know the real Smitty by playing with/against him, and I think that's why they like him.

I know, I watched him play, but people are different in different aspects of their life.
Reggie is the same thing, somewhat.
Brent Barry is a funny guy - emceed the 07 Spurs celebration at the Alamodome - sounded like he was half drunk. My most vivid memory of Brent is 05 Pistons game 7. He has the ball and he's running down the court beside Duncan and around mid-court he passes the ball to Duncan on the fast break. I'm like WTH are you passing it to a big man - of course it resulted in a turnover - he just wanted to get rid of the ball asap.
I always felt that Pop was too hard on him - pulled him as soon as he made ANY defensive mistake but let Finley play on and on no matter what defensive mistake he made.

Reggie is incredibly obnoxious... He comes off as jealous and bitter of players today. He has to put stories and events about himself into every broadcast. And when he actually does try to analyze something, he sounds like the random girlfriend of any basketball fan pretending she has any idea what she's talking about regarding the teams and players.
Anyway. I've always like Brent. John Barry is the dumbest man on T.V., Rick Barry is a gigantic douche, but Brent is cool. I wish they would replace Shaq with Brent on tnt, at least then we can get back to SOME good basketball talk instead of Shaq just trying to constantly be funny and interrupt Charles, which creates the awkward tension that Ernie has to deflect away from.

Shaq is actually really essential to TNT IMO.
Shaqtin a fool is one of the best segments, and tbh, him and Chuck have decent banter. Someone like Brent doesn't carry the weight Shaq does, he was good with Dennis Scott and the stats guy from NBA tv.
They should put Chris Webber on TNT too.

The show was 100 times better before Shaq joined to me, so no I really don't see how he's essential. Shaqtin' a fool isn't good just because of the name of the segment. They don't really need him for it.
I think the "banter" between him and Chuck is forced by Shaq and cringe worthy. You can see it on the faces of Ernie, Kenny and Chuck. Most of the time they all seem to wishing he would stop talking. No one can get a word in without him interrupting or repeating the same joke 20 times. I can barely watch it anymore because of him. Shaq acts like a damn spoiled kid who doesn't get enough attention.
Webber would be good too, but I mostly just want Shaq gone.

Webber or Malone to Inside the NBA. Shaq can stick around on NBATV.
I like Brent Barry. Tony Parker is a lowclass scumbag who's smug face and immoral antics are to compensate for his filthy bloodline and lack of real talent. Every family has the unfortunate relative who is out of line and ought to be disowned. The Spurs have Tony Parker.

Open Court isn't even watchable. It's an embarrassing circle jerk 100% of the time.

Come on, the first two seasons were great. Back when they had Reggie, C-Webb, Shaq, Chuck, guys who weren't afraid to rag on each other.
