Can we please stop talking about how loyal and awesome Duncan is? He planned on leaving the franchise but decided not to because of David Robinson and their previous championship.

If LeBron had won a ring in Cleveland he never would have considered leaving. But Duncan won and still nearly left the Spurs

Source?

In any case most stars stay the initial period and 1 contract extension before considering leaving.

After that, I dont see why they shouldnt be allowed to leave.

no pun intended

I believe that was the following season that he wanted to leave for Orlando. Duncan decided to stay, though.

We don't know what Duncan was thinking about or not. He did say it was closer than people think. Depends on each case. LeBron would have left if he won ? You never know. Lew Alcindor left the Bucks even though they won a title in his 2nd season, but that was due to the change of his faith, IIRC.

He re-signed with the Spurs over and over and over and over. Even after tough losses.

Duncan could've left but he didn't.
Kobe could've left but he didn't.
Jordan could've left but he didn't.
Lebron could've left and he did.

That's the difference.

I forget what year it was but Duncan almost signed with the Magic to team up with T-Mac. Nobody remembers it. He himself came out and said nobody will ever know how close he was to signing. That was even after the Spurs had won a ring I believe too :confusedshrug:

Duncan said he seriously considered signing with Orlando, which offered a six-year, $67.5 million deal, but cited his close relationship with former Spurs center David Robinson and his comfort level with Coach Gregg Popovich as reasons why he stayed with the Spurs.

"Life would have been a lot different," Duncan said before scoring 23 points in a 103-92 victory in Game 2 Sunday. "It was probably a lot closer of a decision than people even think or even know, but it's worked out the right way to say the least."

Obviously you'll never know. Remove the HOF and one of the best coaches of All-Time and it appears there's a decent chance he's gone. For example, if he was drafted to the Nuggets he probably leaves :lol

He would team with T-Mac and Grant Hill... it paid off for Duncan to stay, especially with Grant being injured his entire tenure with Orlando.
