DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Derrick Rose was at the Berto Center on Thursday, although he didn't stay for the lemon pepper chicken and NBA draft intrigue.

Rose is healthy, working out and playing in five-on-five scrimmages at the Bulls' practice facility in preparation for ending an almost two-year hiatus as the centerpiece of the Chicago Bulls.

"Derrick, he looks great right now," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said after the team traded for Doug McDermott in a draft-night deal. "So he's preparing for the next step, practicing with the summer league team and then Team USA, and we'll go from there."

I've given Rose as much shit as anyone the last few years, but in all seriousness I hope he can actually come back and stick around awhile.

Rose was ahead of all young players including Durant. Now hes surpassed by Anthony Davis, Westbrook, Griffin.

The league needs a healthy Drose. If you disagree, the Eastern Conference sure needs him in the least.

Ofcourse it needs players to be healthy... Imagine league with healthy Rose, Oden, Roy etc. So much more fun to watch.

What? Durant has been clearly better than Rose ever was since at least 2010. :biggums:

It's the truth though, he was the best player in the league in 2011. Heck, even your boyfriend said it.

He won the MVP but that doesn't mean he was the best individual player of 2011. Thinking that is beyond asinine. :oldlol:

True. A good example is 2001 Shaq. He was definitely MVP over AI in my books.

He played in 10 games last year...

Hoping he makes the USA team though, playing with that sort of competition could really help get his confidence back and get him ready for the season.

Without going into team accomplishments in the regular season, explain how he played better than any of them. I'll wait.

His 2011 season was absolutely insane. Led the Bulls to the best record in the NBA even though Boozer missed 20+ games, and Noah missed like half the season with injuries.

He took over so many games in the 4th quarter to give Chicago victories it was insane. He was definitely deserving of the MVP that year. Anyone who doesn't believe so wasn't watching.

I'm not saying Rose was better than Durant or Dirk in 2010-11, but he has a case. I'm not even going to argue the others...but the bolded aren't that clear-cut.

Why not Durant? I don't see how Rose has a case over him at all.

I'm not definitively arguing Rose over Durant, if it came down to one season of "pick a player for your team" I'd go with 2010-11 Durant over Rose.

It's just that Rose's role on that Bulls team was much more crucial. Durant was the pure scorer for his team, he really had no stake in playmaking or setting up his teammates. Westbrook was a 22/5/8/2 player that season, and he took a ton of pressure off of Durant with his ball handling, passing, driving, etc. Rose never played with anyone even remotely close to Westbrook's level, he was the singular driving force of the Bulls offense and consistently the focal point of the opposing defense. When he played subpar, the Bulls and their offense were basically ****ed. This is why his season was so great, he consistently came through in the clutch and singlehandedly drove that offense all year. Durant never had to shoulder that burden alone.

Then we get into the stats themselves, which don't clearly point to either of the two players.

Rose:

25 / 4.1 / 7.7 / 1.0 / 0.6 on 55% TS
23.5 PER
13.1 WS
113 ORTG, 103 DRTG
Net On/Off: +2.7 (+8.1 playoffs)

Durant:

27.7 / 6.8 / 2.7 / 1.1 / 1.0 on 59% TS
23.6 PER
12.0 WS
115 ORTG, 107 DRTG
Net On/Off: -0.6 (+6.2 playoffs)

As expected, Durant was clearly the better scorer. But I don't think 2.7ppg offsets the 5 apg difference, which is pretty huge. The difference in PER is almost negligible. Same goes for the O/DRTG considering how good Westbrook was for Durant, and how good Chicago's bench was defensively. On/off and win shares are where you get a pretty clear edge for Rose - his team's offense was 10.1 points better with him on the court, while Durant's was just 4.3 points better. Relative to their positions, neither were great defenders.

Once again, I'm not saying I'd take Rose. Just saying there's definitely a case for him when you consider roles, support (mostly offensive support), and how they contributed to team success.

I wish him the best, he's a special athletic talent for that position that only Westbrook rivals.

Even if he could return to 75% of what he was atheletically it would be great. And it's not like he can't do it. When he tore the ACL everyone said he wouldn't be the same, and he looked almost as every bit athletic after the surgery.

We'll find out in 3+ months.

Why would he try to make the FIBA team? Just keep rehabbing and get ready for the season.

We don't need him anyway, his game isn't good for FIBA.

he really didnt look the same tho, his vertical numbers looked the same because he likely compensated by jumping harder but that explosion off the ground in game was absent

I think he still had every bit of it, but I he was overcompensating for it. I think this is why he blew out his MCL in his other knee partially.
