@WojYahooNBA 4m
Marcin Gortat has agreed to a five year, $60 million contract extension with Washington, league source tells Yahoo Sports.

Well damn. 5 years? Damn. First big fish off the market!

‏@daldridgetnt 54s
There are no options or early terminations in the Gortat deal, per source. Big keep for Washington, which fought off several suitors.

Big men get paid. No surprise.

They're gonna be hating that deal in years 4 and 5, though.

no pun intended

Yeah but he came to the league at 23, and was a backup for 4 of his 7 years. Dude's only played 10,600 minutes in his career.

He's not going to improve, but he'll be a solid player (barring injury) through the 5 years.

He's hitting his bball prime like an 80s/90s guy around 30 years old.

That means they may only hate his contract for 1 season, and it could be used as an expirer, so it isn't that bad IMO.

That's assuming they're able to include him in a deal. Doesn't work out like that sometimes. Maybe he's productive throughout, but I'm going to assume he'll break down around 33 or 34 years old.

Great work ethic, doesn't rely on speed or athletic ability that much

He led the wiz in win shares last year. Just because you only watched the wiz in the playoffs doesn't mean he didn't ball out in the regular season. He was nasty with Nash in phoenix too. One of the best pnr bigs in the L

Wall and Beal will soon be the sickest back court in the NBA, Gortat and Nene will be nice complementary front court. If they can get back Ariza, I think they're an ECF threat next year.

Don't forget that we basically haven't seen Otto Porter yet. Hurt most of the season and then they basically didn't have a spot in the rotation for him when he came back.

Wow. That's a terrible deal. I don't care how much the league is lacking in big men talent. Gortat is getting too much paper. I understand the hope for long term, though. Are they planning on keeping Ariza? I'd love for him to come back to LA.

Very true, he's been completely forgotten in all of this.

Can't help but get the sense he's a total fat little shitter bust though, but we'll see.

Congratulations to all fans of basketball not wanting the Heat to get every good player on the market to stack a cowardly team.

^100% true. No reason to think he can't be productive. We were set at the 3 and he can't play the 2 or the 4 (yet. Could be a good small ball 4 ala Harrison Barnes)

Upon further examination you're right, he's not fat.

It is amazing that Gortat is getting a 60 million contract. So much money. Hibbert got 58 million over 4 years (!). Deandre 43 million, 4 years. Splitter got 4 years worth 36 million from the Spurs (best deal of the bunch). It's partly inflation, partly an elite-big men drought thus lower standards, partly the fact that these players usually provide more than stats show and are defensive pieces. Still, they're raking it in. Saw Kblaze bring up Kevin Willis. Him, a healthy McDyess, prime Mutombo, etc. would be cashing in too. One thing is always true and often quoted from Auerbach, "you can't teach height".

If he breaks down by 33, that is a problem. If he breaks down just 1 year before, then it will be an expiring contract. If they don't end up trading the contract, it will be because they couldn't find a good trade to benefit them, it won't be for lack of flexibility or options.

they probably got too excited because they had originally thought his production would drop after acquiring him from the Suns, not knowing whether his points/rebounds was from playing under a system.

For 12 mil a year, the blocks per game isn't very impressive when you also factor in he's not really considered a passing big.

I think the Wizards are looking at Wall/Beal for the long term.

Who can they turn Ariza/Nene into though.

Could Paul George take this team to the finals?

Worth it for a Center, especially considering what Hibbert got.

hibbert had a bad year for sure and even more woeful playoffs, but i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until next season. still, he likely got overpaid so i hear ya.

i mean, is everyone here mostly in agreement that bosh is better? if gortat can get this on the free market, imagine what bosh could get.

i just can't believe all that money is basically guaranteed. shit, i like gortat but that's just a crazy amount of money. i guess small market teams have to do that. if they draft well next year and nene stays healthy, they have a chance to make some noise...i'm talking ECF noise.

hopefully they don't overpay ariza though. don't just match just any offer. let him go and go after a 'value' pick. while he improved, there's a reason this guy has career years during contract seasons. he's fool's gold.

how about thomas to back up wall? a more than capable PG in an almost ideal 6th man role? i'm sure turner can also go on a budget and i still believe he can excel in the right situation. won't ever live up to his draft billing but at this point, he's a low buy.

Designated player contracts, $100-$200 million dollar endorsement deals (Wilt, Oscar, Dr.J and Magic would do best), Kareem would still be the best player.
