messi is being called upon to carry too heavy of a load in this tournament. he's their primary playmaker and goalscorer while being crowded by 3 defenders anytime he gets the ball.

di maria is the only argentine to step up so far. belgium will give argentina more space to attack and they should be able to expose the slow belgian defense.

the belgian defence aint slow. only van buyten is and he has world class positioning

i would say argentinas defence would struggle more with belgium's pace

De Bruyne will be a key player this game

kompany struggles against quick forwards

alderweireld has problems when he's isolated against anyone with a hint of space

vertonghen has straight line speed but no lateral quickness

federico fernandez and garay move very well for big guys

Rojo is suspended for Argentina and Aguero is unlikely to comeback

I would go with this lineup but it would never happen with the moron coach

Romero
Zabaleta-Fernandez-Garay-Campagnaro
Mascherano
Perez-Alvarez
Lavezzi-Messi-DiMaria

The moron coach will obviously go with Balanta at LB, Gago as his playmaker and Higuain upfront.. what is he going to do against the huge belgium defensive line? argentina needs pace, and this is the most pacey lineup while offering defense from everyone but messi.. i have no doubt that this team would win by at least 2 goals.

This is where it ends for Messi.

Quarterfinals for Messi is a little bit like 2nd rounds for Chris Paul.

2006 WC, 2010 WC, 2011 Copa America.

I won't be surprised if Belgium wins this. Kompany is a rock on defense and Courtois is near unbeatable. They are capable of keeping Messi quiet. Argentina needs to step up their game to win this one.

Bit annoying how every football topic turns into a USA vs England war.

Well, screw it. Argentina hasn't been impressive and Courtois is known as the Messi stopper in the Primera Division.

Having said that, I'm afraid this team is just a sleeping giant that'll wake up and show it's true worth. I hope I'm wrong though, and I hope we can keep up our great play.

Btw, our defense isn't slow, it's freaking elite. It's the offense that needs work.

I think Argentina is going to have a terrible time against Belgium to be honest, especially if they play that last formation with Di Maria and Messi in midfield.

Even while playing 6 pure defensive players like Argentina will probably do, that still leaves Witsel and Fellaini uncovered. Those are not guys you want to leave wide open.

Haha, dude. It's been almost 20 years...

And I'm sorry, but if you don't qualify the game against the US as impressive, then I don't know what is. Argentina always needed a bail-out play by Messi (who is the best player in the world obviously, you won't see me denying that).

im not sure if 'attacking for 110 mins and creating zillion of chances but being unable to score, while the opponent attacks for 10 mins and your team becomes a chaos' qualifies as impressive. thats not a great team.. sounds like arsenal to me
not to mention the blunder by wondolowski in the last minute

I think you'll be fine, provided you manage to cover Messi well (one man on him, plus two extra men helping out positionally every time he gets the ball around the corner of the box) and keep Di Maria in check (that's not so easy).
The advantage you guys have is the fact Sabella sucks and he doesn't know wft he's doing.

not really

if you look back at the past 4 games the belgiums have been playing average football against inferior teams...de bruyne, fellaini, etc all overrated players origi is fantastic tho lukaku is a hit-or-miss. And Argentina is gonna feast on your weak fullbacks.

this is where the road ends for the belgians just like in '86 feel free to bump later

Uhm, first of all: in 86 we reached the semis.

Second: De Bruyne is arguably our most important piece, who was decisive in pretty much all of our goals, and we've won every match up until now. How the hell is he overrated?

Oh well, believe what you want. I think we have a good shot at Argentina. And if we lose, well, so be it. Our team is young as hell. Bright future ahead, son.

Neither team seems to be playing up to potential. Even without Aguero Argentina just need the pieces to fit to be a world beater; though not much can be done about their defense. Similarly Belgium also has fantastic individuals. However their lack of finishing vs the US was a bit disconcerting. If Lukaku and Origi can enter this next match feeling confident and hitting on all cylinders' Belgium gets scary.

I REALLY like what De Bruyne brings to the table and quite frankly was unimpressed with Jose's decision to loan him out (although I understood they had a cluster of mid bodies signed).

cant really tell if belgium are really shit or this team is a defensive juggernaut

anyway not the greatest of games.. belgium were really poor, it looked like they werent even trying at times.. i think every defender except toby played a good game.. biglia impressed me defensively.. and higuain finally played great.. probably motm.. garay was great as always.. messi was active and had some great passes but it looked like he didnt put a lot of effort at times.. still coasting doe

first 1/2 final since 1990.. hopefully dimaria and kun are back for the last two matches

Argentina/Brazil >>> Germany/Holland

Any fan with knowledge of soccer knows that is what will glue eyes to the TV.

But still, no Kun or Di Maria for the next match and possibly the Final. Hopefully Higuain and someone like a Lavezzi show up. Man does Argentina wish they had Tevez right now with these injuries.

Err you mean as a final match? I would say both matches would be incredible. For both matches you have a long history netween arch-enemies if you will and neither of those pairings is better or worse from the quality or storyline point if you will to "anyone with knowledge in---ahem---football". The only reason why I agree in this particular case why a Brasil-Argentinia match would be more hyped/anticipated is because the world cup is taking place in Brasil but that's about it. If the world cup would be played in Germany or Netherlands you can bet your ass that a Germany-Netherland match would be more anticipated by fans around the world.
