We have our opinions. I liked how he spoke his mind and why he chose not to fight in Vietnam even though he would have taken a cushy job. His prime was wasted during those 3.5 years he didn't fight. I watch his old fights on youtube a lot.

Ali was a ember of the NOI until 75, the NOI preached Black people are genetically dominant and white people controlled them through supremacy.

At one time he was racist, he was basically a member of the Black KKK.

if its based purely for his sporting then yeh of course that is fair enough his cockiness and skill was legendary and of course he had quite the fairy tale career so to say

but yeh my opinion was more based on favourite athlete to look up to, so yeh i might have miss understood your question

but like the other poster stated he was basically part of the black KKK

and to Jameer about saying id be racist to if i grew up in that time, i completely get that and im sure we would all be tempted to do the same I just personally look up more to people who go the MLK root and don't fight hate with hate.

Actually all through middle school and some of High school I only did sprints, but then my coach moved me up to the 400m and then I fell in love with the 800m which I have times of 48 and 1:56, I did Cross too but it was mainly to keep me in shape for track, I wish I took it more seriously because my PR is only 18:25, but running is my first love and always will be. I used to frequent Lets Run forums a lot but I got tired of them, but I still go to the site just for the News and Results.

I love watching the 800 and mile/1500, that's how Coe and Ovett are my favourite athletes, watching them go back and forth over the years (on youtube obviously) was incredible, I've read all their books too.

Not as serious as I used to, I'm really trying to get back into racing shape and do some 5k's to try and crack 18 minutes and maybe even low 17's.

48 in the 400m? That's legit. If you did any serious training you get a ton better at the 800m w 48 second 400m speed. You're def a 400/800 guy but with a bunch more miles you could prob be a good 1500m runner. I dunno how much you run but if you just did 800m workouts and then ran a bunch of miles you'd crush a good 5000m. It would take you a solid year of good miles but you should be able to run 16:30 no problem. It took me 100 mile weeks just to run 16:49 when I was 38 or 39. I am all strength no speed. If you built your mileage up all your times (not 400m) would come down quickly. I have arthritis bad in my back so I'm just getting back to running. If I can train for a solid year I can PR again in the 5000m but that would take at least a year. Haven't been able to play basketball for almost 10 years but peak 5000m shape is way better shape than peak basketball shape. When I'm training for 5000m I still do plenty of 200/400/800/1200/1600 and strides so I'm faster than when I player basketball.

He got caught with a banned "steroid" substance per the general myth ,plus he went on to keep fighting waaaay too long.plus, it's harder to capture the world's attention at the lower weights below HW especially in a "niche" sport.

Prolly Cassius Clay.

We all have our opinions bro but mine is that standing up to civil and political injustice is heroic. Given that time period and the pertaining circumstances, it would have been very surprising for an athlete of Ali's mentality to not make racist comments.

Again, that's my 2 cents.

To me forever, the greatest performance by an athlete is Muhammad Ali in the "Rumble in the Jungle" against George Foreman. Foreman knocked Frazier and Norton out, two former world championsn. Heck, he knocked out Norton in two rounds once. Muhammad Ali took the punishment from Foreman calling all his punches sissy and saying stuff like that to get under his nerves. Eventually in the last 20 seconds of the 8th round, Ali noticed that Foreman was very exhausted so he threw out a gorgeous combination of punches within 17 seconds to KO Foreman.

Also I agree, I love Ali for mostly his life in terms of standing up for civic and political injustice. A great example is when Ali in 1990 went to free 15 prisoners by talking to Sadam Hussein and refusing to return home despite running out of medicine to treat his Parkinson disease. He refused to come home until the prisoners were released.

Another reason why I love Ali, he saw a man who was about to take his own life and he stopped him and claimed that saving a life to him meant more than winning a world champion.

He also raised approximately $50,000,000 in charity.

He lost his prime because he stood by his principles when he was not allowed to box because of the Supreme Court case of his refusal to serve. He lost his fortune due to legal fees and he did it all because he did not want to back down from what he thought was right and how he doesn't see the Vietnam War justified because Vietcong never did anything to him.

Sorry I ranted on but a lot of it can be opinionated. But this is why I absolutely adore Muhammad Ali and what he has done for the world as an athlete.

Also he's the greatest trash talker of all time :lol .

I have seen that fight man. Pure class.

His impact extends far beyond the boxing ring, there's no doubt about that.

His trash talking makes people think that he was a jerk but I love that attitude in sportspeople. At times though, he did take it too far, especially with Frazier. Ali crying at Frazier's funeral was very melancholic though.
