the difference between messi right now and messi from 3-4 years ago is the lack of effort.. 3 or 4 years ago he easily ran 2-3 more kms than today and even tracked back at times.. its not like this is the first time he has 3-4 defenders on him.. he always had.. but when you put in effort with that immense skill and creativity you will overcome every obstacle.. hopefully that beast shows up for the last two matches.. IMO its enough to win the WC regardless of how the other mids and forwards play (defense needs to be solid though, of course)

I know nothing about soccer, and have watched the majority of games this WC.
from my uneducated eyes he seems to be making the most impact. Off this WC alone I would give him the MVP so far.
That rodriguez guy on colombia also made an impression on me.
I don't rate Zidane higher than Robben. Zidane has to be one of the most overrated players of all time. Yeah, he had an awesome final in 1998 and scored a nice volley against Leverkusen in 2002, but overall Robben is the more impactful player.

I don't see what's so funny about that. You put Lothar Matthaeus on Zidane Juventus and Zidane Real Madrid and the chance of those stacked teams winning more than 1 trophy increases. Lothar Matthaeus is the better engine and better two way player.
"he is the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him" - Diego Maradona
Lothar Matthaeus is so damn underrated at times. GOAT German player.
Robben is aging like whine atm, that's for sure. His change in mentality recently has been incredible.

I'm not sure it's entirely the lack of effort though. He just isn't that fast and explosive like a couple of years ago anymore.
Maybe that's because he isn't at 100% after the injuries or maybe it's just the beginning of his decline.

nah its the same.. couple of years ago he would have had like 20-25 explosive individual runs in one game, nowadays its more like 4-5.. im not worried though even when he loses some of the explosiveness and quickness in his 30s he still has a great all around game.. would make a great 10
as for robben when you look at his career its pretty obvious that he is an all time great.. although im not sure thats what most people think when they look at him.. injuries, flopping, the 2010 finals choking have taken its toll on him

I honestly don't see the issue. Zidane just isn't what the world wide Real Madrid *********ion fest made him out to be. Of course he's an all time great, but I hate the way people put him on a pedestal, even going as far as calling him the GOAT at times, or place 6 rolling smiles when I state my opinion that Matthaeus was the better player. As far as his hype is concerned, he didn't match it at Juventus or at Real Madrid. He won one Champions League with the most stacked team in the world beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final (being a ghost throughout the game except for his awesome volley.) He wasn't good at the 1998 World Cup either until the final. 3 awesome goals which helped his teams win titles, fine, and he's definitely worthy of being an all time great, but he's not the overall player people make him out to be.

Robben is a more valuable player than Zidane and harder to replace. I wouldn't have said this two years ago, but the guy has become such an ultimate beast after humbling experiences. He's become far less selfish and it actually feels like he's mainly playing for the team and not for his own glory.

I think a case can be made for Romario over Ronaldo, but Romario came back to Brazil too early, and even though we had some stacked teams in the later half of the 90's like Palmeiras and Vasco, it still is hard to compare to the competition that Ronaldo faced in Europe.
His longevity is absurd though.

Mertesacker is obviously a very good center back but his lack of speed gets him burnt on counters and through balls way too often. If Germany was going to sit back and park the bus then starting him would be ideal but it doesn't look like that and you just don't want to gift Brazil a lucky goal. Not sure how Brazil are going to play without Neymar and I'm going to assume they will sit back and try to beat Germany through the counter.
