View Full Version : Car decision

these aren't my only two options but i need some assistance on a decision on two cars.
this is one of them http://huntsville.craigslist.org/cto/4555635196.html
and i'm going to go see it tomorrow. the thing that worries me is that this car has a problem (can probably be fixed easily) but audis tend to break down a lot and they are expensive to fix.
the other is a honda accord for $1200. problem is it has tons of miles (212k) but that's the only problem. the engine is a v6 and is newer than the car itself. i'll take some pictures of it tomorrow. i'm going to ask the seller how many miles the engine has on it. it needs some paint and there's a pretty big tear in the driver's seat but that's all.
everyone is saying go with the honda because they don't break down often and they're cheap to fix but i want everyone's opinion. thank you

At your age id take an audi. Now id take an accord. Old Accords and Camrys are eternal. I have friends who keep them as second or third cars just in case.

That said.....you will be grown soon and possibly shopping for another car. If its just to push for the summer/next year maybe go with what you like best and save responsible decisions for later.

First one of my friends to get a car had an 84 Nissan 280Z. Cheap little sports car but it looked nice and was fun to drive.

Im sure he doesnt regret it even though he did eventually run it into a brick mailbox and spark a now 18 year fued with the owner of the house.....

Point is...if its a throwaway car for a year or two get what you like.

If you plan to keep it a long time get the Honda. A hondas engine could blow out and you would find one in 20 minutes for a few hundred dollars.

An audi engine goes out you are paying 800 dollars and your first daughters virginity just for parts. That wont get anyone to put it in for you.

for cars under $3000, I say just get what you really like. they will need repairs no matter what anyway.

you are spending even less, so if it catches your eye and it runs then just buy it.

don't listen to friends so much, most people just want an appliance and I don't think you are one of those types since you are considering an Audi.

I bought an Audi at 20. I still loved the Audi, but wished I got something economical like a Honda or something. Toyota first if you want something that will last a long time and is cheap to repair or a Honda.

i like nissans myself, but get the accord over the audi.

My bro has a passat. Maintenance and parts for those cars is really expensive. I think VW/Audi reliability claims are a little overstated IMO.

If you want a cool looking car and like spending ridiculous amounts of money on maintenance and constant repairs get the Audi.

If you don't care about your car looking cool, and you want to save money while having a more dependable vehicle get the honda.

I've owned a Mercedes and a Jaguar and an Audi, the 94 camry I have now is the best of all them

I had a A4 quatro. transmission went out. they're apparently notorious for that. problem is its AWD and apparently its a huge pain to put those tranny's in, on top of it being Audi where Audi is a pain in the ass to work on compared to most cars. its like VW stupid. lets just say DIY is not probaby going to work for you with Audi's.

on the other hand Honda Accords IMO are the easiest DIY cars by far(other than civic/corrola maybe), very smart-simple put together with 10m everywhwere more or less, easy to find bolts, and swapping stuff out is rather simple. from what i've seen Accords have the best resale value of any car, people believe in them, and they generally run up to 300k at least....

i'd say Honda if you're not into the whole being vain thing. oh and obviously if anything ever does happen Audi is going to be extremely expensive to get parts for altho there are probably a lot of A4's sitting at junkyards with bad transmissions. Accords are everywhere tho, and the A/M market, along with the used market have massive supply for their parts.

edit - the Audi you're loooking at is misfiring. you could have a blown head gasket or something. HELL NO!!

I'd prob avoid the Audi. The auto transmission on Audi/VW are much less reliable. I've had a Jetta for 7 years and only little things have failed. However, my brother is a VW tech and he said the transmission on cars like mine fail at 100k (I'm at 98).

I used to be a Volkswagen mechanic and my last 2 cars have been vws, so I'm a little biased here. You usually wanna get the timing belt changed every 100k, so make sure it was already done, or else it will bust and the engine will be fvcked. Also the coils are pretty easy to change, and actually had a recall on them which he prolly didn't get done. Make sure the water pump has been replaced, and the coolant is pink. If he put the shitty universal green coolant, it will **** up the water pump and radiator. If you wanna know anything else or have questions hit me up, I'll be more than happy to answer.
thank you, will do

Between the 2 Honda. If you have a lot of disposable income then go with the Audi.

PHX_Phan
07-07-2014, 11:58 AM
Expand your options. You're looking at an old Audi (just stay away) and an Accord with over 200k on the clock. Doesn't matter that it's a Honda, that shits on it's last leg and has probably needed a new head gasket for the last 40k.

Shopping for this cheap, you're better off buying American. Cheap parts and resale and you usually end up getting a better car in the end. People think their Honda's and Toyota's that eat up a quart of oil a week are still worth a lot of coin because 'they'll run forever!'

Unless it's a 6th gen (or older) Civic or a 22r powered Toyota, don't buy a car over 200k if you don't know shit about repairing them.

rezznor
07-07-2014, 12:25 PM
had an audi and and accord as my back up car. loved my audi but for your situation, get the honda. that thing has 160k miles on it and is probably older then you are but still runs great as long as you maintain it. if something goes wrong it is cheap to fix. i traded in the audi last month, but i'm gonna keep the honda until it dies.

Thorpesaurous
07-07-2014, 12:31 PM
I have an 04 Honda, and it's a great car. I have almost no miles on it though. But before that I had a 95 Civic that I got in 97, and that thing ran to over 330k miles.

My brother had an Audi, and he had similar Transmission problems. But worse than that was the suspension. Those AWDs are a nightmare with the independent drives. My father is a mechanic himself, and the car was just a nightmare.

I understand the logic of if you're in that low end of the market, you're not getting a keeper car, so why not just get what you want. But at the same time you don't want to start dumping money into a car that cheap just to keep it going for the short time you're looking to keep it.

07-07-2014, 12:47 PM
Like Thorp says, you're going to have repair/maintenance issues with either so go with the one that will be easier, less expensive to maintain.

I hate having a car payment so I'll keep a car forever. My 98 4Runner had 298K and was still running fine when I finally replaced it last year. Really can't go wrong with Honda or Toyota.

How long will it take to double the money you have now? These prices all will get you cars that'll run one day and die the other. It isn't worth it. The money you're spending buying used, very old cars with high milage in repairs alone you could of gotten a better car.

Buying a used car in general no matter where you go and what they say, they just want it off their lot. At all costs. There's always something wrong with it and if there isn't there will be.

Save up to 5-6k, but then again if it's necessary for use now stay away from high milage cars. 2006 with 110k isn't bad. I believe it should be 10k a year on miles.

yeah you could probably just fill it with putty but its going to crack eventually, and the body work will be wavy as fukk.

if insurance were covering it they'd change the skin

could always go to a pick and pull lot and get a used door for like $150~ if you're lucky, put it on, but it'll still cost him like $350+~ to paint it with blends.

of course theres always Maaco, where your whole car will be peeling in a few years~

If your budget is below 2K, forget going for a known dependable vehicle. If it's Honda or Toyota and it legitimately runs well, they'll want an arm and a leg. If it's cheap, it's probably in need of a major repair.

When I was shopping for a beater DD in that price range, I liked the Cobalt/G5's. Interiors are shit, but you can pick them up with lower miles for under 2K, and it won't be some dirty old beat up piece of shit. Can definitely get two years out of it if you take care of it. Those Impalas like the one you posted also have solid engines and will be cheap.

Best bet is to have a friend who knows about cars go with you to look at it in person. We can't tell you if the engine is about to shit itself just by looking at some random ads.
