View Full Version : Aaron Gordon vs Derrick Williams, who was better coming into the NBA?

I remember Derrick Williams almost going #1 over Kyrie with the way he played in the ncaa tournament. I feel like him and Gordon are almost the same, except Derrick was a better ball handler and shooter coming in. What makes these two different? I think Gordon is slightly more athletic though

They are not so similar. The only thing they have in common is that they are both tweeners and will both be labeled as "busts" in the future.
Aaron Gordon has tweener size and no skill at all. What he does have is natural athleticism.
Derrick Williams was the better college player, but wasn't really that athletic(by NBA standards). Also lacked three point shooting so his skill was irrelevant at the NBA level. Similar to Evan Turner.

In Gordon's defense, he can play extremely good D and he can pass really well. That doesn't mean that he's going to be good at all but those are his only two skills.

Not so sure about his defense, havn't seen anything that impressed me other than highlight reel blocks where he is relying on athletiscm. This would be ok if he was 7 feet tall with a decent wingspan, but the wingspan is not impressive at all. He also appears to have a low IQ, so unless he is put in the right situation it's going to be irrelevant. See Michael Kidd Gilchrist, a guy labeled as the next Pippen on defense as a prospect. lol

Derrick Williams was. He was #1 in many mocks and had very high expectations because of his potential and skill. I don't think Aaron Gordon was ever #1 in any mock.

Williams has no three point range.
Unless you are 7 feet tall and/or a freak athlete you need three point range to succeed in the NBA. That's why every decent player with an "unathletic" label has a great three point shot.
And he is not that athletic by NBA standards. being a "good athlete" simply doesn't cut it if you want to be an asset. One needs to bring more to the table.

Are you not aware the three point line is farther in the NBA?
Anyone can shoot threes in college. There is a reason this guy is below 30% for his NBA career. He can't shoot threes at the NBA level.
Unless you are a 7 footer or a franchise player you need to be able to shoot threes. That is why he is a failure in the NBA.

Out of arizona ,derrick williams was very athletic.he had good slashing moves , nice little outside shot .He would get past the 4's and over power the 3's.he was a Beasley light imo.
Gordon is just a guy with a high motor and will mostly rely on his hops and score off put backs, garbage plays , leak outs, oops.
I still think Gordon will last longer in the league because he does have that high motor and will to play defense always has a place in the league and mentally he looks like he will mature faster and know his role.

So you missed the fact he can defend guards and centres and that everyone who has been involved with him talks about how high his bball iq is.
Derrick Williams was more polished but Gordon has a better base to build from. Don't expect him to do much this season though as he is a long term prospect.

Of course Smart will get selected (as long as he performs to the standard that is required), its stupid to make these assumptions right now when we dont know how either will play in the NBA

Lavine, Gordon, Williams, Wiggins, all the same type of low skill, high athleticism players.
Calling it here; Parker is a future superstar. Giannis is at least a very good 3 and D SF/PF.

In theory his game reminds me of Kenneth Faried, maybe not the same level of intensity though. Players like that will always have a spot in the league, hustle and effort are two things that make a difference in the game without doing so on the stat sheet
