It's based on WAR which is the estimated number of team wins attributable to each player, based on RPM. RPM is a player's estimated on-court impact on team performance, measured in net point differential per 100 offensive and defensive possessions. RPM takes into account teammates, opponents and additional factors.

Having a max salary makes top players paid much less than what they''re bringing to the owners. Here's an article from yesterday showing that if James were to sign a 3yr deal with Miami, he would make the Heat about 161 million over those 3yrs while James makes 100mil less getting 60mil.

Dirk...:pimp:

If he doesn't decline next year he might represent the 3rd best value in the league given his 10 million salary.

A little too simplistic because it doesn't factor in the business side of the sport. Kobe is worth more than $1M based on his jersey sales alone. I do like the idea of monetizing production and measuring it against salaries.

Baseball has the stat that a team of AAA player would win 58 games so that is the minimum wins a team can have based on WAR. Anything above that is contributed by the positive WAR of the actual players on the team. That way they are able to calculate how much they paid for each win above the minimum. It'd be pretty cool if NBA stats eventually got to the point where we could calculate something like that. I'd be interested to see who is the most efficient at using their cap to produce wins. However, I think the variation on something like that is more limited in a league with a salary cap.

They should have included Westbrook.

I don't see the point of including Kobe, he missed the entire season.
