Got a few questions about them:

1. They obviously peaked in 2001 going 52-30 and nearly making the Finals, but what happened in 2002? Injuries? Just caught lightning in a bottle in 2001?
2. Considering how jump shooters are protected more nowadays, would they be more successful in today's NBA with their style of play?
3. What would be a modern version of the Cassell/Allen/Robinson trio?

I'm too lazy to look it up but I do t think they shot a lot of 3pts back then. Most of big dogs buckets were curls from the top of the key. Cassel will usually stick a midrange J when least expected. Only Ray was the prolific shooter and he spent most of his bucks time curling and taking it to the hole for a pull up J.

Thats what they did, pull up J's. Remember this was thw time when teams werw bleeding to score points and teams were perfectly fine putting two bigs w/o range and playing them 40mpg each.

50 win season is nothing to scoff at, but they had no business being eliete. Their defense wasnt good, and tim thomas scored sometimes. I cant remember if Mason was there in 2001 or was it 2002.

Karl had a team that bought into his defense... which of course was under rated.

Cassell was the vet that pushed this team to the east finals , but Scott Williams ban from the most important game of the Philly series , was truly the difference.

granted they would not of beat the Lakers , but they would of made a far better showing in the finals than Philly's one win.

--------------
Next year the team disbanded, and Karl was gone.
It was a sad mix , sending Allen to Seattle for ageing Payton.

My Pistons played a special role in the destruction on the Bucks Big Three Perimeter squad.

The Pistons sucked in 2001, but changed coaches (Rick Carlisle) and adopted the "Going to Work" Mantra for the 01-02 season. We played decent most of the first half, surprisingly to fans, but the even greater surprise came in the second half when we started to climb in the standings.

We played the Bucks at Milwaukee late in March and we were tied for first. The Sixers were dealing with Iverson's injuries and had faded from the leagues elite, Milwaukee seemed like the favorite in the East along with the stunning New Jersey Nets who were having their own Renaissance with Jason Kidd.

We beat Milwaukee and took first place. George Karl made some comments about how much the Pistons cared about a "meaningless game" saying that's why they won. Sam Cassell guaranteed the Bucks would win the division, not Detroit. The two teams were to meet in the final game of the season and the Bucks seemed pretty sure that first place would no longer be in doubt by then.

It wasn't, but the Bucks playoff lives were at stake. Milwaukee went 5-13 after the Pistons loss and were now in need of a win in Detroit to make the postseason. The Pistons had clinched the division and the number two seed in the East, but they were still mad at Karl, Cassell and the Bucks. They trounced Milwaukee in front of me and 20,000 revitalized Piston fans. Milwaukee missed the playoffs (within a year Allen and Big Dog were traded) and we began the accent that would culminate two years later with an NBA title.

And to think I liked that Bucks team at one time...

Random ass anecdote but relative to the context of thread. Thanks for sharing this. Enjoyed the read...

That Sixers series was ruined. We should've been in the Finals.

"I think there's no question about that. The league, as a marketing machine, the bottom line is about making money," Allen said. "It behooves everybody for the league to make more money, and the league knows that Philadelphia is going to make more money with L.A. than we would with L.A."
Allen said members of his family had told him that they were sitting across from NBA commissioner David Stern on Sunday and noticed him stand up to watch a replay after it appeared Allen got away with committing a foul against Iverson that wasn't called.

"He jumped up real mad like he was cheering for Philly," Allen said.

Bucks coach George Karl said conspiracy theories were "summer talk," although he claimed three other NBA coaches had called him after Game 5 to raise that very issue.

"Sam Cassell said that Kevin Garnett and Rod Strickland had called him, so it's out there," Karl said.
That foul on Scott Williams :facepalm
Even when we don't suck, we're ****ed.

Would have been awesome to have the Milwaukee Bucks in the finals that year.
But they got forked, just like the Sacremento Kings in 2002

This team got hosed by the refs in the 2001 playoffs in the philly series.

Not many teams run 2 wings that move off the ball as well as the big dawg and jesus shuttlesworth.

Wall-Beal-Ariza would be my modern approximation, although Beal obviously hasn't grown to the level Ray was at, and Ariza can't ****ing dribble.
