DALLAS -- Point guard Raymond Felton admits he played poorly for the New York Knicks last season and looks forward to proving he still can play "as an elite point guard" with the Dallas Mavericks.

"Just to show everybody that I've still got it, I still can play," Felton said on a conference call with Dallas reporters. "I still can play the game at this level. I still play as an elite point guard at this level. That's just all.

"When you come off a season like I had last year, there's always a point where you've got to prove yourself coming back the next season. And trust me, I look forward to it."

The Knicks insisted that the Mavs take Felton along with center Tyson Chandler in a late-June trade that sent point guard Jose Calderon, center Samuel Dalembert, 2013 first-round pick Shane Larkin, shooting guard Wayne Ellington and two second-round picks to New York.

Felton, a nine-year veteran with career averages of 13.1 points and 6.5 assists per game, is likely to start for the Mavs, who would prefer to keep soon-to-be-re-signed point guard Devin Harris as a spark plug off the bench.

Felton struggled last season while dealing with off-the-court distractions. He averaged a career-low 9.7 points and 5.6 assists, shooting only 39.5 percent from the floor. He faced felony gun charges stemming from a February arrest that occurred after the attorney of his then-estranged wife turned over his loaded, semi-automatic handgun to police, and she alleged that Felton threatened her with the firearm.

Felton, whose divorce was recently finalized, reached a plea deal in June to avoid jail time. He acknowledges that his personal situation affected his performance during the Knicks' disappointing 37-45 season.

"I was just fighting with a lot of injuries, and I was fighting with a lot of mental stuff off the court, but like I said earlier, I don't make any excuses," Felton said. "Last season was all my fault. It was nobody else's but mine. I take the blame for it totally.

"Like I said, I look forward to this year. I'm putting all that behind me last year. I'm looking forward to this year with the Mavs."

Felton, who made similar comments to the New York media in the summer of 2012 after an underwhelming one-season stint in Portland, denied that poor conditioning was a factor last season. However, Felton said he's "probably in the best shape I ever been in in the past four or five summers," in large part because he's determined to have a bounce-back season.

"I've got a lot of things that motivate me this summer," said Felton, who is due $3.79 million this season and has a player option for $3.95 million in 2015-16. "I'm just really getting after it, just working extra, extra hard. I'm not really doing anything different, just doing it more and working at it harder."

Even at this prime he wasn't elite. He was a good scoring point guard, like Mo Williams-esque, but elite?

That whole statement was wrong.
1. Not elite
2. Never was elite
3. He should be using the "we" pronoun, not the I

That's pretty harsh. Wishing someone to die. Why not "I hope he never gets signed again and has to do something else in life besides playing basketball? Maybe be an official taste tester? Oh wait, Felton would probably prefer doing that job over the NBA."

He was an average point guard at best. If anything now and have been a below average pg. How many times do we bring him back Knicks? Dam just let him stay on another team.

I don't even think he was that good of a scorer. Mo Williams atleast had a stretch where he was averaging 17+ for a couple of seasons. Felton had that one good stretch with NY but besides that one year he couldn't even crack 15 a game on teams that were in the lotto.

At his best he was pretty solid defensively and better than average at running an offense. Middle of the pack starter/low end starter at his peak IMO.

If that's not a photoshop...wow. I don't think anyone around 6 ft tall can defend at the NBA level with that kind of build. And the only other pg I can remember getting that bad was Chris Childs.

he's a lot like a bigger Nate Robinson which gave him the opportunity to be a better passer than a scorer in my opinion.

Jameer played more with bigs and the pick and roll offense

Felton is a lot about passing out to the 3point shooters as he drives while making some system passes for cutting players.
(i.e. why he had a good season under D'Antoni)

his shot selection within the 3 point range is probably worse than his 3 point shot selections. But he also has no problem going into chucking mode to get his points production.

If Carlisle can help him get some points right by the basket as part of the system plays. he can still give you that 8-10 points in 25-30 minutes of play if you're not looking for him to pass the ball and run a system on its own and wrack up assist numbers.

JJ Barea who needs to work on his 16 footer.

Don't be surprised if he comes back strong next season.

It's the Mavs way: bringing the best out of players no one wanted.

NBA should make a rule that players should be under 10% body fat to be in the league. It looks bad and unprofessional to have so many fat asses running around.

DMAVS41

There is no reason why Felton can't be as good or better than Barea was in the 11 playoffs and regular season.

Barea;

11 regular season - 10/2/4 54% TS 106 ortg 109 drtg

11 playoffs - 9/2/3 50% TS 107 ortg 111 drtg

All about role. I think Felton in that "Barea" type role of 18 to 22 minutes a game could be really nice for us actually. More than that and he'll have a lesser impact.

And at 3.7 million or whatever...just not a bad deal at all.

probably because deep down inside, he doesn't want to find out what happens to his effectiveness when he's no longer stronger than the opposing guard and can absorb contact not just based off of muscle, but pure body weight.
