I was rooting for the "Main opposition" in the beginning until they involved extremist elements into the war and attacked the kurds they screwed up right there. Looks like Assad was the winner at of all this.

This map shows what has been true from the start, the main opposition to Assad's regime has always come from the hardline Islamists. A lot of media tried to create spin in the first years of this conflict by focusing on a minority of moderates within the rebel movement and presenting those as representatives of the revolution as a whole.

One thing to note about these maps though: it's just controlled area. Controlling large swats of desert doesn't really mean that much.

Well this is obvious. Hardline extremists tend to be willing to die and kill more than moderates.
