I think potential here also means that teams can explore the possibility of the versatility of Hayward and see what they can do with him as he's still focusing on developing his game.

while Afflalo is pretty much a specialist. who's gonna get a contract that is better than his peer by the time he hits the FA market.


versatility may not nessecarily trump specialist for the long haul of their career though. In fact, those are probably the ones that gets moved down the rotation faster than the others.

Too many teams, with too much free money and they've got to spend it somewhere, so Hayward, who is probably a $9-$10 million player at most, suddenly becomes a MAX guy. 6'5" is a pretty good height for a SG.
his ability to put on weights without reducing much athleticism (not reaching his natural weight until at a later age) is probably what made him underpaid when he signed that contract.

Comes down to age and perceived upside. Afflalo doesn't figure to get much better while Hayward is just coming off his rookie deal.

Arron Afflalo was averaging 8.8 PPG at Hayward's age, so it's justifiable to consider Hayward as having more upside.

Hayward can create for himself and others. Affllalo is an off the ball player. His D is overrated too IMO. Poor defensive rating every year of his career, across different teams,and only .5 steals a game. Steals aren't everything, I get it, but just being active on D consistently will lead to more than .5.
