But he decided to not pick up his qualifying offer, thus making Parsons a restricted free agent. Now Mavs offered Parson the 15 Mill Max. Only way Rockets can keep Parsons is to match the 15 Mill offer. :oldlol:
:biggums: I'll have some of whatever this guy is smoking :yaohappy:

It really was an outrageously shortsighted move...

Ummm.... no.
Here's how it works. They COULD have used their team option on him for 960k, yes, but then at the end of next year he's completely unrestricted. Add that to a max Bosh signing this year, and he's most certainly gone. Rockets have no rights to match offers.
So, they gave him the qualifying offer this year (about the same money) which makes him restricted. That gives them the right to match any offer for him.
It's really a risk either way. Mostly 100% loss if you do the team option method to let him become unrestricted, though.

Why not just pick up his team option and let him be UFA, then provide him with the same contract that the max bidder would next offseason? Trust in the team's ability to get him to stay. That way you get him for cheap for a whole another season and still can retain him. :confusedshrug:

Theyd still have his bird rights next year so as long as he didnt WANT to leave they could still offer whatever it takes to keep him, which is what theyll have to do now anyway.
In which case he'd be an URFA next season and they'd have zero chance of keeping him.
As it stands now, Parsons future is in Morey's hands.

Why?
It is not about keeping him next season. It was a promised raise for Parsons gone out of control due to Cuban messing with the Rockets.
Parsons has expressed interests in contract renegotiation throughout all of this and last year. Morey promised him a new contract, thus released from his 900k next year. The intention was to match any reasonable offer for him, but with Mavs giving him the second highest contract ever for a 2nd rounder, Morey could not match and could only let him go.
Cuban probably would not have offered 15m for Parsons if he wasn't on a Southwest rival.
But he decided to not pick up his qualifying offer, thus making Parsons a restricted free agent. Now Mavs offered Parson the 15 Mill Max. Only way Rockets can keep Parsons is to match the 15 Mill offer. :oldlol:

Somehow its funny for Houston to pay him 15m but if Dallas pays him 15m its a good move?

Honestly it's sort of a respect thing. If you want him, pay him this year and avoid restricted or unrestricted free agency all together.
Yeah, they could have done the UFA thing, but then they're deeeeeep into tax territory if they pay him a max contract next year after signing a max or near-max dude this year.
Like I said, it's a risk either way. They might get ****ed on this one.
Why?
Because if he wanted to leave he could. This way, the only way he leaves is if Morey says he can.
Not personal, its business.

Making the player you want to keep a UFA instead of FA is the standard and guaranteed way of retaining that player. Cuban just made a completely unreasonable offer.

The thing about it though is that the Rockets championship window is wide open next year. With Parsons at $900k they could've signed whoever they wanted and possibly been the favorites to win a ring. Now they have to either let him go or be stuck with the exact same team that just lost to the Blazers in the first round.

From what I understand they can match the Dallas offer as well as giving Bosh his contract.

It was a long thread last week about how I think Morey is an idiot. This is one of his idiotic moves.

They could if they wanted but that's expensive.

Dallas has the cap space and Houston does not.

What's crazy is that he's getting paid more than Dirk is getting paid AFTER Rox offered Dirk Max.
