View Full Version : Philly has to spend $30M, who will they sign ?

According to the CBA every team has to use at least 90% of the salary cap, which means Philly has to sign some free agents for around $30M total. I think they were planning to take expiring contracts plus picks from teams looking to sign big free agents, but those opportunities are mostly gone, so what does Philly do now ? They have to spend the money.

Do they go after Monroe ? Ariza ? Blatche ? Stephenson ?

Isn't the penalty for being under the cap just that you have to pay your current line up more money? So they won't need to spend all of the 30mil. They'll probably get rental vets like Orlando

Yup.

If they don't reach the salary floor, the difference is split between the players under contract.

They should throw a ridiculous offer sheet at a rival team's RFA just to **** with them...

Philly doesn't have any rivals though, they are tanking again next year.

If I was them I would probably try to get Monroe, though I think Detroit is going to match whatever they offer.

Their rivals are those challenging them for the worst record in the NBA

Why not Bleds? Build a defensive monster duo around him and Noel....oh me.

They will wait for a team that is in the Tax and isn't doing well in the middle of the season, and take on salary and picks to help get them out of the tax.

My guess is Brooklyn but they have no real assets. Maybe Denver

There should be a much harsher penalty for such an egregious act.

Well you don't actually HAVE to spend the money...or I should say, fill the cap space.

My understanding what happens is everyone on team would get a raise for the season in proportion to make sure Philly pays out at least 90% of the salary cap, if that makes sense.

So they really don't need to sign anyone, but teams usually fill up cap space anyway....

Why not just acquire some assets by taking on someone else's expirings instead.

The theme of the offseason has been returning home. Are there any good players from philly?

This. They won't pull an Orlando or Lakers and make idiotic signings just because...

If they are smart they will get a salary dump type of contract (Stoudermire, Bargnani, Garnett) or just give to money to their young players.

If they are dumb, they will sign someone like Loul Deng to a 4 year contract.

This seems likely. iirc they don't have to hit that number until partway through the season

No way Philly gets a big contract player for more than a year. Having cap space once the young talent starts coming together is crucial.

And just curious: for those complaining about the 76ers tanking, what do you think they should have done? Stay as borderline 1st round exits forever? :confusedshrug:

Eric Gordon is the man for them. By the time Sixers stop tanking, he will become a movable expirer. And he is injured all the time, so he won't make team any better.

Kobe is from philly.

But i have a better idea. They need to spen 30m but are probably looking to tank. They should just go the Rocky route and give a random fan ashot at the NBA. Maybe me ha ha.

Just sign a fan for a maximum contract, hype it up as giving back to the community, create a tornado of press and hype for the team, probably a lot of feel good stories and still tank bad while having a good excuse for it, being a sucky player

ME! I'll sign for 30 million to get dunked on in practice and wave a towel at the end of the bench. I'll do the players taxes too

Contracts for picks.
Thaddeus Young for Steve Nash plus 2nd round pick, since that clears 10 million next year.

Splurge 30 mill between TMAC - IVERSON - MARBURY

That will sell some tickets while you are tanking
