View Full Version : LeBron Winning One Title In Cleveland Makes Him GOAT

Not even arguable either. Cleveland hasn't won anything since there were still separate water fountains for blacks. The man would be looked upon as a demigod in that city for finally taking them to greatness.

Realistically I don't think so. I think he's have to win at least two titles in Cleveland for people to start considering him even top 3 (by the end of his career that is).

But believe me. With him coming back, if Cleveland won a NBA title with him leading the way, he definitely jumps up the list.

I must say, you have low expectations for him for somebody who jocks him so hard.

Wiggins averages in post season 31/7/5
Bron averages 25/6/4

Branstans will be saying he brought the chip home to Cleveland and is the GOAT while Wiggins shrugs his shoulders and polishes his FVMP ring.

13-15 year olds will be saying Wiggins is going to go 8/8 in the finals for his career.

Book it and deal with it.

It's still Jordan - just look at the stats... who had better stats?

Jordan... Then consider that Lebron plays in the less physical, "open-paint" era due to the spacing created by 3-point shooting, the defensive 3 seconds rule, and refs not allowing hand-checking.

So Jordan put up superior stats playing a tougher brand of basketball - shot quality and achieving efficiency was dimensions more difficult without the floor-spacing, defensive 3 seconds, or wide open paint that today's player enjoys.

Which one of these is harder to score in the paint?

It would make him the GOAT in the Cleveland region, since that area has been battered, both in terms of sports and economically. Cleveland was once the nation's 6th largest city; it is now down to 45th and is still losing population in an era where many cities are rebounding.

Winning multiple rings in Cleveland could enhance his legacy nationally in a way doing so in Miami could not. He would be taking a team of youngsters and a city that has not won anything in half a century to the promised lead. He took on this challenge by leaving a team that some considered the most stacked of all-time. He could have stayed in Miami and been back in the Finals next year for the 5th consecutive year but he took on a great challenge. This could enhance him in a similar way to Formula 1's Michael Schumacher leaving a 2-time defending championship team for a mid-pack team and making it dominant. While the general view is Senna was faster and Prost was better at race craft, Schumacher has a case for GOAT partly because he took on that challenge and succeeded spectacularly versus staying with a top team.

It is funny how Cleveland is suddenly being presented as a great destination. No free agent wanted to touch the Cavs before LeBron got there. They won 33 games last year and 24 the previous year.

It's still Jordan - just look at the stats... who had better stats?

Wilt is the GOAT if you are looking at statistics.

MJ won 6 titles for his first team.

Did MJ leave in his prime for a lottery team and turn them into contenders? What LeBron is attempting to do is unprecedented for a GOAT-caliber player. Miami will be in shambles without LeBron while a 33 win team will be a top 3 seed in the East since LeBron makes any team he is on an instant contender.

:lol at the "four #1 picks" talk. Bennett averaged 4/2/0 on 36% last year. Wiggins may be great, he may be a bust or he may be average. We don't know yet. Irving is a top 15-20 player.

Surely you aren't that Simple?

Bennett is reportedly in top shape and looking like a number 1, they just drafted a potential superstar, then they have guys like TT, waiters,Andy V, and Irving., while also ousting a shit coach and replacing with a good one.

Cleveland had a lot of internal problems last year and the coach sucked, they gave up on him.

There is no denying this team is stacked with talent, LeBron walks In and will reap the benefits of a stacked team like he always has.

Wiggins, Irving and lebron are you kidding Me?

No dude, don't kid yourself. Lebron won't be doing anything amazing other than joining a very good group of talent capable of winning.

Not even arguable either. Cleveland hasn't won anything since there were still separate water fountains for blacks. The man would be looked upon as a demigod in that city for finally taking them to greatness.
Chicago hadn't won a championship until MJ won there as well.
San Antonio hadn't won a championship until Duncan won there as well.

San Antonio hadn't won a championship until Duncan won there as well.

Bad logic.

He meant the city. Chicago won a NFL title MJ's first year in town. San Antonio is a one sport town so it is a different situation. Cleveland has not won in any sport since 1964 and the city has been battered economically for decades. Cleveland was once the nation's 6th largest city; it is now 45th and still falling. Cleveland has been losing population since the 60's, going from 915,000 to 390,000. If any city needs a boost, one could argue it is Cleveland.

I was a heat hater but I truly respect Lebron for making this decision and wish him the best of luck.

If Bron wins a ring in Cleveland I will leap frog him in my goat list and put him at 5. After retirement he will get the bounce to as high as 3.

In order for him to take KAJ spot at 2 he would have to get a minimum of 2 but more than likely it will be 3.

For him to take MJs spot though he gotta at least tie him at 6 rings and then it's a debate

maybe, besides the fact that he was there before and I don't know if another Cavs had won the MVP before.

I remember reading how Moses or Kareem being one of the only player to ever be traded after winning the MVP award.

I also wonder what are the numbers of teams who's had MVPs yet didn't win championships.

I don't know if this should count as a positive or a negative for the franchise. Because there's certainly been teams that's just never developed a MVP environment.

does MVP count as a franchise achievement?

I don't know, I don't want to lower the standard of achievement for all. But I think having goals instead of the whole "if we are not really good, we might as well just tank and be really really bad" is better for the league.

I know at the least, the coaches would be proud.

I remember reading how Moses or Kareem being one of the only player to ever be traded after winning the MVP award.

KAJ asked to be traded. He wanted to live in NY or LA, the two metropolises he had spent his entire life prior to the NBA in, and went to the team and informed them of his decision a year in advance so the Bucks could trade him and get value for him. He did not want to leave them high and dry. Thanks to KAJ, the Bucks got an all-star, a 16/11 center and the #2 and #8 picks in that year's draft. This helped the Bucks, who KAJ felt were good to him--but entailed a sacrifice on KAJ's part because the Lakers were almost gutted to get him. If he left on his own he could have joined a much stronger Lakers team with those extra pieces but he wanted to do right by Milwaukee. Yet people criticize him for not winning a ring in LA prior to Magic?

gilalizard
07-13-2014, 12:21 PM
No, not even close.

It will make him GOAT for many Ohioans, I'm sure. But they're hardly going to be objective about anything at this point. The reality is, like any other championship, it will have to be taken in context. And the likely context is, if they win one, he's on a team stocked up on young talent. And with good (supposedly) good coaching.

Now, if that one victory outweighs all his Miami Finals "wins" and Finals appearances, what it does do is point out how easy he had it in Miami. And thus lessen the historical weight of those "victories" and appearances.

Because, even though it may mean everything to Cleveland, Akron and the rest of Ohio (and his drooling, mindless stans), it still means the same to everyone else: A single Finals victory by a very talented, well-coached team with the best player on the planet. And with that situation around him, for him to even be considered for GOATness anywhere but in Ohio (and the fevered imaginations of his feckless stans), he will have to string together 2 different 3-peats. Because that's been the standard since MJ.

If he can't do that, he can't be GOAT.

-

What will be interesting is how much of a leader he actually will be. He always has come across as someone who reads from a script when it came to his "leadership". Spouting off things he thinks genuine leaders say. Always having to publicly proclaim how he's the leader, instead of effectively leading himself.

Now he's got no other established stars around him. No veterans to buoy him. Can he really be an effective and mature leader for young, fresh talent? He'll never provide the maniacal leadership of MJ or Kobe. Nor the steady, cool-as-a-cucumber leadership of Duncan. Nor the fun, chill surfer charisma of Dirk.

LeBron acts too goofy and childish for that. Can he create his own effective style? Or will it just be more inspirational sport-movie cliches?
