Julius Erving played 2 games for the Atlanta Hawks in exhibition games vs. the ABA in 1972. Keep in mind that the games were "intense" and had "bad blood" . Coaches and players were thrown out of games due to competition and pride between the 2 leagues.

In the early years of the games, the NBA dominated. However, in the latter years before the merger, the ABA had the upper hand. In 1975, the ABA won 31 games, while the NBA won 17 games. In 1976, the two leagues merged.

Atlanta 112
Kentucky 99

Julius Erving 28 points, 18 boards in 42 minutes

Atlanta 120
Carolina 106

Erving 32 points, Hudson 33 points

After 2 games, a judge ordered him to return to the ABA's Virginia Squires.

Julius Erving and Pete Maravich on the same team? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEAcks4i8lc

Shit would've been ridiculous... I won't speak about wins and whatnot but from an entertainment standpoint? Crazy to think of.

Those Hawks never really clicked (even off-court), especially when Pistol came around, but they still won 46 games in 1973 and took the Celtics to 6... Then you add a young Dr J into the mix.
I'd even move Pete to PG, make it look something like this:

Maravich
Hudson
Erving
Washington
Bellamy

Looks good, especially if everyone knew their role... Lou was constantly getting buckets, Pete was scoring, diming and styling, Walt still had some game in him (at least for a couple of seasons), and Julius was already beasting.
They could've made some damage in the league, at the least it would've been really exciting basketball with highlights for the ages, with a bright future ahead too probably.

Pistol Pete on playing with Dr J:

“Julius was the most creative player that I’ve ever played with. It was so easy to play with him. I think during that time my average was about 14 or 15 assists per game,” the LSU legend said. “I’d just come down the court and his eyes would see mine — and I knew that he was going to the hoop. I’d just throw a little rainbow up there and it’d be history because nobody could get up like Dr. J.”

Thanks for those bits of trivia. I didn't know about that brief special connection that the Pistol and the Doc had.

Shhh don't worry about semantics like that.

The ABA really ****ed us, it's the CP3 to LAL scenario all over again. We should've been a dominant franchise.

In all seriousness though I never knew about this, this is really cool
