View Full Version : Gasol 3 Year, 22 Million-Plus with Bulls

Turned down 2 year, 10 million per year with Lakers for 3 years aprox 7 million with the Bulls. There's no word yet on whether the deal includes team or player options. Bulls looking solid IF Rose is healthy, otherwise they'll still compete hard if they contributions for McDermott and if Taj and Jimmy Butler improve. Spurs or OKC would've been the best to win a ring but Bulls are 2nd then the Lakers. Either way not mad about Gasol's decision as a Laker fan. Hope the best for him.
Free agent forward Pau Gasol is finalizing a three-year, $22M-plus contract with the Chicago Bulls, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Pau was probably set for life after his Memphis contract.
The irony in you telling a busines man like Pau to learn maths, criticising him for loving the game for than money would be shocking, but we're at ISH.

Good for him actually. He probably doesn't want to get called ring chaser so he didn't sign with the Spurs. Kobe stans hate him so why would he go back to the Lakers.

Isn't Miroctic the greatest player ever? So don't Gasol and Mirokta play the same position? If they have Myroctoka, why pay Gasol?
WTF?!
Why didn't we offer 3/$30m???:( :facepalm
Because he would have turned it down. The lakers stink the Bulls don't. Not sure why lakers fans don't realize their team is lottery bound.
The ony question I have is why he decided bulls over spurs.

Lakers actually offered 3 years 29.
Gasol didn't want to be a Laker anymore. He's taken too much abuse, been floated in rumors every year, and been the scapegoat at every turn.
He needed a fresh start and he's going to be a great fit.
3rd year is a player option.

A shame what they did to him really. He seems like a very good guy and he helped bring LA two more championships. Where was the "time to trade Kobe" stuff back in 2011, when he got smacked up and down the court?
Hopefully Pau finds success in Chicago. He deserves it.

You mean when he twisted his ankle three times in like 3 weeks :coleman:
I'm obviously a huge Pau fan, but realistically, they should have traded him long ago. They should have done the Josh Smith deal when it was on the table, the Rondo deal, and even the scrapetogether deals teams were offering after that because he didn't fit with anything they hve tried to do since then.

It really did feel like Gasol's time in LA was overdue. A fresh start would probably for both Gasol and the Lakers at this point. The Lakers are retooling and looking old and slow is probably something they want to start moving away from.

We talking about the same Pau Gasol here? Dude has looked flabby and sick the past 3 years. 10 million a year for a bench player is a lot. Bulls will regret the deal by year 2 of his contract.

In a league where Marvin Williams, Jordan Hill and other players are getting 7+ this contract is a steal. Gasol, if healthy a big if, will still be a serviceable bigman in a few years.

It doesn't matter how many other bad contracts are out there. Until this year, we only had one horrible contract, and that was in Boozer. Now just when we got rid of it, we went out and found another one in Gasol, albeit not as bad.

7 million for a big man is not nearly the contract Boozer received. Boozer is making almost 17 million this year.
Besides Gasol is a better overall player than Boozer by a long shot. Better overall defender, better passer, better offensive player etc.
Alot of teams in the league would have killed to have gotten Gasol for 3 years/22 million. It's not a bad deal and it is one of the better deals this offseason.

Gasol is in the Kevin Garnett stages of his career. He'll only get older and slower. And it's not like he was that nimble to begin with.

Look at the other contracts being signed around the league this offseason and I think every Bulls fan should be very pleased with Gasol's deal. You're getting Pau Gasol for a yearly salary right between Jodie Meeks and Avery Bradley. That okay with you?

Gasol can still be a 15/7 players in 28 minutes.
KG is a role player at this point in his career.
Gasol's game never relied on his athleticism. If he can stay healthy, I think he can age like Duncan has. A big if....

Coaches like Brown and D'Antoni can make a player seem a lot more washed up than they really are. D'Antoni misused Pau, and he probably lost some interest. I expect a bounce-back year for Pau, and don't think the Bulls over-payed at all.

i hope you guys who are ragging on him for taking less money also knew that there was almost no chance of him returning to the lakers this offseason unless they threw ridiculous cash at him. They didn't and he is gone. win-win for both team.

Great deal for Chicago, and not so bad for Pau who could have received less on other teams like OKC.
He clearly wants to contend, and CHI has shown interest in him for the last couple of years.
This is going to be fun for the East if Cavs can trade for Love. Suddenly the two favorites in the Eastern conference are Bulls vs Cavs if Rose can remain healthy. Good for them.

Not that Im defending D'Antoni, but his system is a free for all that involves setting a lot of high picks. In doing so, Pau had the opportunity to roll to the basket to get his inside opportunities, but he chose to settle for jumpshots.
How is that D'Antoni misusing Pau? By giving him the free will to get points how he would like to?

Pau just wasn't the most efficient in those pick and rolls surrounded by shooters. If they had put players around that weren't just camping outside waiting for 3s, teams wouldn't KNOW that Pau isn't a good jump shooter and that he is most effective putting the ball down every possession.
Pau has never been a great roll to the basket guy in a pick and roll offense. Unless teams were doubling Kobe, or Kobe was drawing a mismatch. Play any random PG with him who doesn't command as much attention as Kobe, and we are left with a big man who can't hit open shots, and isn't athletic enough to roll to the basket without someone else drawing attention down low.
Point Guard/Pau/Odom might have worked.

lol this idiot. D'Antoni wanted Pau too shoot corner 3's you blithering idiot. HE said so in public. In D'antoni system there's room for just one guy inside the 3pt line and that guy was Howard.
Pringles made David Lee a guy that lived in the paint getting rebound, into a mid range shooter. Granted dude become one of the best mid range shooters in the NBA but that was blind luck for Pringles, it's idiotic moronic have a double double machine on your team, a guy that fight in the boards and take him away from the paint and make him shoot jumpers or 3's.
Learn to watch basketball dude.
D'Antoni is a terrible coach that should kiss Nash ass everyday for the paychecks he got.

I love the deal. Agree that it's one of the best of the off-season in terms of fit and value. Right up there with Lebron, Dirk, Pierce.
I'm just really curious to see what the Bulls are going to do with four post players that deserve PT (assuming Mirotic is not useless, and deserves at least some PT). I say trade Taj and Dunleavy.

His big concern with the Lakers would be once he signed this deal, then at some point they would just trade him out.
Maybe Chicago does the same thing, but at least they will give him a fair chance to contribute first.

Noah and Gasol next to each other for periods of games gets me excited.
Two of the best passing bigs in the L together will be fun to watch.
The fact that Taj and Mirotic are waiting off the bench is scary.
Bulls are a pretty tall team all of a sudden with a lot more shooting....
Pau 7'
Noah 6'11
Mirotic 6'10
Taj 6'9 (plays much bigger)
Bairstow 6'9
Dunleavy 6'9
McDermott 6'8
Butler 6'7
Snell 6'7

You will love him when he's creating plays in the post and knocking down mid range jumpers with good consistency.
He's a shot in the arm for a Bulls team that needed some different scoring methods.
He fits in well with the type of players already on roster.
