Show premiered last night on FX. The first ep. looks promising. Just found out this is based on a comic about vampires after watching it.

It's a comic series. Thought about reading it myself.
It was a novel series first. A trilogy. Then they made the comic books. They were planning on making a movie but it ended up as a show instead.

How many times are they going to adapt this thing?:wtf:
Twice I guess. Since the first is original.

They do the comic thing now with everything. Game of Thrones, The Dark Tower Series, Dean Koontz Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes and others have graphic adaptations.

It's not bad. The 1st episode did nothing to make you really think its going to be good but I guess they are banking on curiosity.

It looks to be picking up.

I thought about Helix while watching but Strain doesnt have the awesome music.

I'm in though.

I was distracted so I probably missed something, but can someone explain what the point was with the restaurant shutdown scene?

I'm not entirely sure. I know the inspector found a rat and that the lady and punk rock guy are planning to sue the airline company.

The most significant thing I got out of that scene was that their body was slowly breaking down.

Is the heart the old man with the sword got the dude's in the coffin?

Also, FX is nearing HBO in terms of being the top network for original series, the two new FX sitcoms Married and You're The Worst are very funny.

No, I don't think so, because that other guy said "do you still have her heart?" HER. at least I think that's what I heard.

Pretty sure it will be revealed that "her" means his wife.

Technically about monstrosity type vampires. The question being if their generic I'm guessing...??..

I'm curious, are the dead passengers vampires different from the living passenger vampires? The dead ones, seem more zombie like while the living ones seem more functional and like traditional vampires.

The acting or writing isn't the best, but it's definitely keeping my interest for now.

This guy completely blasts it though lol: http://uproxx.com/filmdrunk/2014/07/episode-2-of-guillermo-del-toros-new-show-is-as-good-as-the-first-if-that-helps-any/ - he makes some very good points.

Doesn't do it for me. I feel like the writers don't know what they want to do right now. Sometimes that fixes itself (Parks and Rec), sometimes it doesn't (almost every show that starts like this). I'll see it through, tho. There's nothing on during summer...

Why the fvck didn't the CDC people post something on YouTube or something. Or leak vids and pics to a newspaper? They had enough proof to at least warrant people not just assuming they're crazy.

Yeah I don't understand why they would keep it secret. At this point they need all the help they can get to destroy those things.

F's assistant is so dumb. Chick talking bout she would rather die than kill humans. :facepalm Those things aren't human anymore

Anyone still watching this?

Unfortunately. I keep saying "well it HAS to get better next week" and it never does. :(

The 2 FBI agents in this past episode were sooooooo fkn cheesy. Terrible acting. I feel like this show cares more about showing gore on TV than advancing the characters or the plot.

TheReal Kendall

Anyone still watching this? I am but dumb characters are dumb.

I'm liking it so far but I do agree on the characters are dumb.

The only smart one is the old man and I have a feeling his heart bout to give out on him soon.

Did the vampires pay off the CDC or something? They had the proof right in their face.

Patrick Chewing

CDC guy is probably in on it, that's why there has been no press on it yet.

So the pest control officer will eventually become some vampire killing badass, but it's taking forever for this show to get there.

Yea I hope he does. I really like his character for some reason and I want the Mexican dude to help too.

Yeah the show is pretty slow.

How come the sunlight didn't affect the 4 survivors? Or is it that they where in the early stages of the mutation?

Also I don't know if it has been stated or not but it seems like the new born vamps are much weaker than the older ones.

Good News For Eye Worms! The Strain Renewed For Season 2
EXPAND

Those of us who are patiently waiting for the vampire apocalypse to finally get off its undead ass, good news! FX has confirmed Guillermo del Toro's horror show The Strain for a second season. Meaning the show has 13 additional episodes to finally show humanity getting its ass kicked. Er, drained of blood.

I'm going to assume that the second season will follow the second book in The Strain Trilogy, The Fall. That's just a guess, though. Here's the book's synopsis from Wikipedia:

The vampire race is descended from seven vampiric "Ancient Ones." A vampire faction, led by a renegade Ancient known as the Master, instigates the takeover of human civilization. Elderly billionaire Eldritch Palmer, having been promised immortality by the Master, uses his influence to create a news blackout, ensuring that the vampires face little resistance. Abraham Setrakian, an aged vampire hunter, is hopeful that the lost grimoire, Occido Lumen, holds the key to defeating the Master, and searches for it before the Master's forces take over. Setrakian is aided by epidemiologist Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and pest exterminator Vasiliy Fet, who have joined those resisting the vampires. Goodweather also seeks to protect his son, Zach from his wife, Kelly, who is now a vampire and is driven by an animalistic instinct to convert her family. Meanwhile, the other Ancient Ones enlist gang member Gus Elizalde to destroy the Master.
I continue to find it hilarious that Gus is still somehow the most important person in The Strain universe.

Hey...tonight's episode was a step in the right direction. Who the hell were those weird dudes at the end? Anti-vampire vampires or something?

Also that cab driver was fvcking retarded.

The cloaked guys were awesome.

That commander of vampire special forces was pretty badass, reminded me of Nomak from Blade 2. Was funny the way he kindly handled the kids then seconds later headshot the nurse like nothing. :applause:

Did anyone else stick with this through the whole season? I did and I must say I'm very disappointed. It's like a train wreck.. you don't want to watch but you can't look away. So many stupid decisions on the characters' part. TERRIBLE acting. The plot makes no sense at times.

The only thing I'm still intrigued by is the vampire civil war and The Ancients they introduced in the last episode. I could not care less about Eph and his kid; season 2 would be better off without them.

FX's other new show, The Tyrant, was 100x better.

agree with all this. i want to stop watching but can't help myself because i want to know more about the mythology and vampire politics. these are some of the dumbest protagonists i have ever witnessed, even worse than the idiots on the walking dead. eph's son makes me long for the days when carl would just wander around and getting into shit with zombies. ugh

The master can carry a heavy coffin in a milli second but look like such a btch against a bunch of weak humans?

I hate everyone in the group except Kevin Durand. The stupid kid makes me miss Carl from TWD.

I like the Mexican guy because he comes from the hood but he's a bad actor lol

I also like the civil war thing, that'll be the main reason I'll keep watching.

I think I'm in agreement with the general consensus. I like the idea of the show, and I want to know more about the world it takes place in; it's history, the nature of the different factions, etc., but the execution is horrible.

The writing is terrible; the story is too implausible for me to suspend my disbelief, the dialogue isn't good, they have people behave in ridiculous, unbelievable ways, and the capabilities of the vampires are wildly inconsistent. For instance, the master can move faster than the eye can see, and is extraordinarily strong, until he's confronted by the main characters; then he's just big, and dumb.

Most of the characters are annoying. The child actor is especially terrible. I don't mind the lead, the German, the Argentine woman, or the old man. I'm annoyed by the Ukrainian, the hacker girl, the wife, the alzheimers mother, the Mexican (his storyline looks like it will become interesting, but I don't like the way the character is written), and most of the other characters.

I don't know honestly. I like it and enjoy but part of me thinks it may just be because of the lack of shows like this. The writing and effects can't decide on what they want to be which is a problem. One minute it is embracing the fact it's a bit low budget/cheesy/campy then the next it's trying to be serious. If they just embraced the cheesiness i think it would have turned out a lot better. Some of the mexican guys lines would have seemed far less cringe worthy if they weren't delivered as if they were serious for instance. Just would be easier to put aside any of the insane/implausible things happening if it was known that this is trying to be in the b type cheese vein rather than the flat out serious world it seems to want to inhabit at times.

The finale was a big let down though, really just a bridge episode to next season without really resolving or adding much of anything.

I think this line says a lot about the show too, the only characters I can name as Eph, Satratkian (spelling?) and the master. I also call them hacker girl, mexican, alzheimers like you just did lol. It think maybe the german is also called Einhorn or something. But really this show doesn't have a large cast yet it still fails to write characters in a way that they are memorable people with back stories. Compare that to something well written like Oz, the wire, deadwood or game of thrones and I can name most characters in a series with way more lead characters and stories going on.

hell yeah. she was so damn annoying. about as useful as having a crying, hungry baby around during the zombie apocalypse.

there's actually alot of genre shows on tv right now, recently ended, or coming soon.
helix, sleepy hollow, penny dreadful, the originals, vampire chronicles, hemlock grove, american horror story, supernatural, walking dead, constantine, true blood, z nation, dracula...

and that's just the horror/supernatural genre off the top of my head. you also have all the sci-fi, fantasy and super hero shows as well.

Love the 1st episode, it's been downhill since. The master makes me laugh, dude was acting like a bitch getting hit by some weak ray of light coming from some broken window, but then in direct sunlight dudes used his superhuman strength and speed to escape. I wonder why he didn't used both, seconds before to find a dark spot on a dark room (:lol ) and manslaughter an old guy and some average dude with his son.

It started the episode with a Romanian flashback within a Romanian flash back (the first of which had the Romanians speaking English, the second had subtitles).

It was sloppy.

I'll watch because it's cheesy, but it's definitely not improving.
