Meeks, the first Pistons free-agent signee this summer, will engage Caldwell-Pope for a starting job with those two the only pure players at that position.

"I like competition," Meeks said today at his introductory press conference here. "That kind of stuff just makes me play well. But we're on the same team. Regardless of the situation, I'm going to root for him and I hope he roots for me."

The Pistons eventually will sign at least five free agents.
