It's highly unlikely we're alone in the universe, NASA experts are saying, and we may be close to finding alien life. In fact, it may happen in the next two decades.

NASA held a panel discussion at the agency's Washington headquarters on Monday, where space experts talked about the search for Earth-like planets that host life. Based on recent advancements in space telescope technology, scientists estimated that in the coming decades we'll confirm suspicions that we're not alone.

"I think in the next 20 years we will find out we are not alone in the universe," NASA astronomer Dr. Kevin Hand said in footage filmed at the discussion and posted on YouTube. Check it out in the video above.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden echoed Hand's sentiment.

"It's highly improbable in the limitless vastness of the universe that we humans stand alone," he said.

Just this year, NASA's Kepler Space Telescope picked up on an Earth-like planet in the "habitable zone" of another star. At the time, the observation of the planet, Kepler-186f, was hailed as the first discovery of an Earth-size planet orbiting in the habitable zone of a star similar to our sun.

Scientists believe there are potentially many more Earth-like planets in the universe -- and some of them could be home to alien life.

"Astronomers think it is very likely that every single star in our Milky Way galaxy has at least one planet," Dr. Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said during the talk. "Sometime in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, 'that star has a planet like Earth.'"

With the expected launch of the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018, NASA's planet-hunting mission will get an extra boost. The new piece of equipment is designed to study infrared light, making it easier to spot extrasolar planets.

But NASA may need even larger and more powerful telescopes to discover alien life.

"To find evidence of actual life is going to take another generation of telescopes," Dr. Matt Mountain, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, said at Monday's event. "And to do that, we're going to need new rockets, new approaches to getting into space, new approaches to large telescopes -- highly advanced optical systems

Why the fck do we even want to find out. Let them live over in where ever they are.

Also, a meteor is supposed to rip us apart in 2029, so they better get a move on that 2 decade estimate.

wait haven't we already confirmed there's organisms in metorites? It's silly to think there's no life in the universe, intelligent life is what may not exist. The odds that another intelligent life form that can fly through space exist in the same tiny window of time we have been around for aren't as high.

Why would us being alone be terrifying?

More terrifying would be a species coming her to steal all the resources of the planet.

if we get discovered it probably would be an unmitigated disaster for most of us.

Eg. when europeans discovered the new world

Earth is a level 0 civilization. The aliens or w/e you want to call them that can reach Earth are much more advanced than us and they have no use for us, our resources or our earth. No benefits at all. It would be like the US colonizing some random isolated Island tribe and enslaving the 200 members to fish all day, it literally serves no purpose.

However, once we start to "develop" then maybe other life forms will take interest. But we are decades away as we still can't even do basic shit and we are corrupted as **** as a society.

Edit: Here's the scale that the scientists/astronomist use. Warning: It's very interesting

It would be scary because of the ramifications of the universe being that large and somehow only this planet supports life? Mind bending.

In a few centuries we will be talking about how weak an era it mustve been when slow, dumb, weak humans were still playing in the premier basketball league on Earth.

According to the bible, it's unlikely. So I'll say no alien life until proven otherwise.

According to the Quran, 100% we are not alone in this universe. I wonder how religion is in these other worlds, do they see Earth as the holy planet where Jesus, Muhammed, and Abraham all walked on? :lol

i was hoping this was stuff about UFO's and stuff. felt like we were really on the verge of catching one real soon with all the sightings and wack stuff lately.

i mean life on another planet news feels so obvious, i hate when they talk it without it being proven yet. like we all suspect it already....get back to us when you actually find them
