At a press conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver floated the idea of the league adding a midseason tournament that would be similar to domestic cups in European soccer.
There are zero specifics about the plan, which is clearly in the earliest possible stages of development. We have no idea how it would work or when it would be played or what the stakes would be or which teams would be allowed to enter.

Perhaps an NIT type of format for the nonplayoff teams
Best out of 3 rounds.
Whoever wins that tournament is guaranteed a top 4 pick in the lottery
with 14 teams might be difficulty. Two teams would have "byes"

How the hell would you know the non playoff teams by mid season?:biggums:
You gonna have teams making a playoff push injuring themselves in a tournament.
If anything and end of the season tournament for lottery trams for draft position would be decent i guess
How bout fix the goddamn All Star Game first??!!!

Shit idea. Players already getting gassed out by the end of the season. If they are going to do that they need to lower the amount of regular season games.

It sounds like a riff off of Bill Simmons' single elimination tournament for the last playoff spot in each conference.
I'm not crazy about that idea either. But it does ask that the league cut the season to 74 games or something, which I something I support whole heartedly. I really feel like a bit more rest would give us a better product night to night. And with the amound of games being televised nationally, I don't think losing that chunk of the schedule would kill the league. But there's all types of other things to consider.

this would be perfect for the NBA. Have if every odd week or whatever. A knockout tournament. 1 match knockout. Have the best teams from the D-League too (like top 4 from the past season).
there's plenty of irrelevant games. A team that has no way to reach the playoff might have a good run in the "cup" and have a reason to go on. Being a 1 match knockout there's plenty of room for drama and surprises.

This.
If you took 10 games out of the season itd be cool if you had something like thr champions league. Other than that its stupid.

I don't understand the point.
If the winner gets to move up 2 spots or something in the real playoffs though, then it could be cool.
But really the best thing to do is just make the regular season 50 games long. And then expand the real playoffs if you want to.

i don't like that it devalues the finals
but definitely some encouraging thinking... i think
The NBA and its affiliates have nearly a full calendar schedule going already. They just need to market the D-League better, and be even more engaged in international play.
October - NBA Preseason
October 29-31/Nov 1 to mid-April - NBA regular season, plus the D-League
Late-April to June - NBA Playoff, plus Draft
July - NBA Summer League
July-August (even years) - Olympic or FIBA World Cup(goes into September)
You can't expect your pros to play 12 months a year. Promo some prospects, international play just like you promo your superstars.

I think this is a great idea if they can set it up correctly.

how about 1 v 1 or 2 vs 2 tournaments? Kobe & Swaggy P vs Lebron & Kyrie would be a heck of a match.

DeAndre Jordan's free throw shooting surely would be a liability in a tournament setting. :D

Soccer fans get one month without games, and that month it's transfers and new signings galore, basically it's always on. Now that's a full calendar schedule.

What kind of lame response is this? Are you actually making fun of someone who has won 5 rings, for the fact that they dont have 6 rings? huh?
as for the tournament, it will be a lamer version of the ASG. No one will want to play. There's no benefit and it will increase risk of injury and wear you down, and take away from the break to rest. There has to be a real benefit to it for any team to risk their players. At least the ASG, the players are pretty much force to compete and it's only one game, and they get to be called "All Stars".
Here is my idea to completely reinvent and fix the NBA. It will cut the schedule to 69 games (hehe) and mimic an NFL style schedule.
From the beginning of November to the end of April, each team plays 3 games a week.
All games are played on the exact same days. Every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, every NBA team plays a game. 15 simultaneous games at once.
This comes out to 69 games a year, after cutting out a week for All Star festivities.
In addition, teams will play the same opponent three times in a row each week. These mini-series will capture the adjustment based nature of the playoffs. This also means you will only see 24 teams in a year, max. I suggest we cut that number to 20, putting a stronger emphasis on divisional and conference play.

Makes me think I'm missing something because it seems like an obvious comment but the point of the soccer cups is that teams from all levels get to play in it. In the F.A cup you can end up with amateur clubs playing against premier league clubs. An NBA team only mini tournament is just silly as it provides nothing? Would they put d-league teams in it? Even so that's still not enough other teams for it to be really meaningful.
