yeah i think its a sinkhole...they appear all over the place. a lot even here in the US. imagine it sucking your whole house down while you're sleeping, including you, its happened...and they're dead.

its like that minor news that happens every so often but nobody reads it because its not big enough to headline.

Anyway, this was most likely a methane release. The entire Russian permafrost is melting down at increasing rates and there is so much methane in it that it is going to give global warming a really nice speed bump.

This looks different from a sinkhole in that the rim of the hole is raised, so it seems like material was ejected out of the earth rather than fell into the earth.

Here's a good view

Supports the idea of a gas explosion.

Scientists dispatched to the scene of a massive crater on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Siberia, Russia are learning more about the mysterious origins of the hole and hope to figure out exactly what caused its formation in the coming days.

Previous estimates of the crater's size, based on aerial surveillance, placed the diameter of the hole at around 260 feet, but scientists at the scene quickly discovered that the ovular expanse was smaller than originally thought at just under 100 feet wide.

Initial depth measurements at the site revealed that the hole plunges up to 130 feet into the earth and sports an icy lake at its core, The Siberian Times reports. The steep, plunging walls of the crater are comprised of slowly melting permafrost that drips into the frozen lake below.
