http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2014/7/15/5903529/adam-silver-future-nba-summer-league. Silver's exploratory idea would hold a tournament that would be showcased in Las Vegas. Similar to soccer, the tournament would essentially be a quick tourney for NBA teams to win a trophy outside of the NBA Championship. I suggested about two years ago a similar idea. Two best regular season teams meet at the all-star break for the "George Mikan trophy" or whatever they wanna call it.

Lame
A 1v1 tournament would be better

Pointless. Only trophy that matters is the Championship trophy.

If they actually do it as an FA cup style tournament what is the point though? It'll be d-league and NBA teams and what else? Basketball isn't like football is in europe where countries have multiple quality leagues and teams from lower divisions actually make money, have fans and have a chance to knock out some of the higher division teams. If it were a world basketball club championship it'd work but just an american trophy doesn't have enough different divisions to make it worthwhile or taken seriously.

Just for d league only.

Funny how none of these constant "new ideas and innovations" the league comes up with actually improve the game. But they all seem to have the potential to jack up revenue.
I know its a business but its like theyre not even trying to APPEAR to emphasize quality anymore. Its just a wholesale sellout for cash. Its actually getting cartoonish.

but they already play a full season and no body watches that. Maybe an interesting mid season mini tournament would be every division on the NBA pools their players and makes a division all star team, these teams then play off in a 3 day long tournament for a division all star trophy. D-league gets to submit 2 teams one for each conference. You'd have 8 teams.

It's only lame because of how poorly fleshed it is.
Obviously would take some thought to figure out what to do, but just a tourney between the best teams is wack. tourney between the worst teams for extra lotto balls would be fun.

The NBA is the only well known basketball league in the whole world that does not have such a tournament. It's like 50 years behind the rest of the world to just now realize that.
Of course NBA only fans don't know that....which just proves their ignorance once more.

Almost every top national basketball league in the world has such a tournament. There is nothing strange or unusual about this at all.
Not having one, is what is very strange and odd.

He should lower the games played in the season then if he ever wants stars to compete in his tournament. As it's been mentioned in this thread that players are gassed at the end of season, which is true. Plus injuries to consider.

Agreed, if you're gonna do this the regular season can't be 82 games.
