Dirk Nowitzki Passes Up Most Money In NBA History (http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimpagels/2014/07/16/dirk-nowitzki-passes-up-most-money-in-nba-history/)

Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki may have taken that discount to new levels Tuesday after signing a shockingly small $25 million, three-year contract to stay in Dallas for his 17th-19th NBA seasons.

Nowitzki had max contract offers from the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers of $97 million over four years but was reportedly never interested in any offers outside Dallas. Instead, the 12-time All-Star voluntarily took a 65 percent pay cut, leaving over $72 million on the table. Let that sink in for a moment.

Possibly shares or a stake in the organization. Worth much, MUCH more than a 4 year contract.

Player's Union is probably pissed AF at him for doing this. They fought tooth and nail to get as much money as they can, and then these stars are being shamed into taking less money, supposedly for the sake of getting more players on the team.

The Mavs are under the cap already. What star player is going to play for Dallas because Dirk took a paycut?

wow what a bunc of overpaid losers. the max cap should be at 25 mio and even this would overpay too many scrub players. the hate regarding the owners is so funny. if 5-22 mio arent enough for a player than why they dont go away, but wait.... just in the nba you earn that much. so nba players better getting their ridiculous paycheck and stfu

Lakers are denying the story

A Lakers official disputed ESPN report that indicated the team tried to entice Nowitkzki to leave Dallas for max-level money. The report said that Nowitzki refused to enter negotiations with the Houston Rockets or Lakers. But a Lakers source familiar with the situation said the team would have never offered a max-level offer to Nowitzki considering they planned to set that money aside both to pursue LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.

being loyal by leaving 72 million dollars on the table when you already brought a championship to that franchise is pretty stupid. I don't care how you try to spin it. 72 million dollars... let that sink in for a minute. that's more money than all of us on the board will make in our entire lives combined. 72 million dollars. can't believe the Mav's hosed him like that. Even if Dirk wasn't going to be a baller and spend the money on himself that money could have set up his children and their children and their children after that.

This. No way either team offered Dirk that type of money. First, everyone knows he is as much a lifer for the Mavs as Wade is to the Heat and second, considering the Rockets could only off a max of 4/88 to Bosh..how could more be offered to Dirk?

Mark Cuban needs to give Dirk a small percentage of that franchise as additional payment for his loyalty when he retires. Jerry Buss gave Magic Johnson a small percentage of the Lakers back in the day.

Dirk is deserving of the same given his extraordinary loyalty.

He had a max offer from the Rockets.

Dirk never has really cared about having 400 million rather than 200 million....so I understand why he did this.

I just hope we actually make the playoffs. I'm not in love with this roster a ton to be honest. I think if we make the playoffs and are healthy...we could be a legit contender, but I worry about actually making it given our reliance on older players and actually lacking depth right now.

I'd hate to see Dirk take that big of a pay cut and actually put himself in a worse position to win titles. Hard not to love Dirk...he gave up potentially 70 million over 4 years....and a better chance to win...because Harden, Dirk, Howard...and the Rockets likely would have then matched Parsons....is the best team in the league over the next 3 years.

Cuban says Dirk has still never touched his NBA salary since entering the league. Dirk is set.
True. Dirk is actually a really humble fella. I've never really met anyone like him. I know Dirk personally. He's a good friend of mine. A neighbor actually. For those that don't know, despite making $200 million in NBA salary alone Dirk has still never touched his NBA earnings despite NBA being his only job. He is still renting out a studio apartment in East Dallas in my apartment complex. Rent $600/mo. His car is a 2005 Honda Civic that he bought used in 2011 off of a SMU student who had just graduated and could now afford a better car because he got a job paying $45,000 a year. He begs me to change his oil for him as a favor to him. Then he invites me over to his apartment for German BBQ (which is horrific) as a way to pay off his debt. He buys his groceris from Aldi. He buys clothes from goodwill and when he feels fancy, he goes to JC Penney for some slick outfits or suits to wear courtside. His parents still send him his plane tickets to visit Germany in the offseason (Dad has the big bucks you know as a professional handball player). He goes out to bars, all his drinks are paid for since he is Dirk and this is Dallas. His wife's wedding ring is a cubic zirconia. He's already discussed that his kids are going to public schools. He and his family just bought insurance from Obama Care. Most of his money is tied up in penny stocks. He brags about the 0.25% interest he's earning on his savings account. And he has borrowed money from Delonte West to pay bills.
