Many people actually thought that Kobe would surpass MJ. This notion lead to Kobe accumulating many haters and stans. Overall, I say Kobe's career is a disappointment based on those expectations.

Word. I remember after the 2002 Finals, I believed in the hype. I thought the Lakers would at least four-peat, and I truly thought Kobe would surpass Jordan and become the greatest player I'd ever seen. It didn't play out that way, obviously, but we shouldn't fault Kobe for that.

It's similar to the situation with 'Bron. If everyone could forget about their expectations and hype, they would recognize both guys as two of the greatest players of all time and enjoy watching them - instead people bitch about how they're not perfect.

You can't call Kobe's career a disappointment though. It just got off to a VERY good start.

LOL. Stans were excited and haters were shook at the possibility of Kobe winning 8-9 titles after 2001. Kobe doesn't have a normal career trajectory. After 2001 at 22 years of age logic dictated that there was no where to go but up for Kobe but he didn't really improve much from 2001.
