View Full Version : Kobe's career is a dissappointment
2000-2001 Kobe- 28.5 5.9 5.0(regular season) and 29.4 7.3 6.1 (playoffs).
The Lakers went 16-1 in the playoffs which is a historically dominant run.
Kobe was only 22 years old. I remember hearing that MJ admitted that Kobe was better than him at the same age. The comparisons to MJ were valid and completely reasonable. Many people actually thought that Kobe would surpass MJ. This notion lead to Kobe accumulating many haters and stans. Overall, I say Kobe's career is a disappointment based on those expectations.

5 rings, 7 Finals, a MVP, being top 10 all-time and likely finishing 2nd or 3rd all-time in scoring is a disappointment?

Word. I remember after the 2002 Finals, I believed in the hype. I thought the Lakers would at least four-peat, and I truly thought Kobe would surpass Jordan and become the greatest player I'd ever seen. It didn't play out that way, obviously, but we shouldn't fault Kobe for that.
It's similar to the situation with 'Bron. If everyone could forget about their expectations and hype, they would recognize both guys as two of the greatest players of all time and enjoy watching them - instead people bitch about how they're not perfect.
You can't call Kobe's career a disappointment though. It just got off to a VERY good start.

the difference between kobe being mj and kobe being kobe is this
- 2001 ( kobe dominated the playoffs, shaq could have let him win finals mvp but took over against a sh*t finals team )
- 2002 ( again. kobe dominated the wests best. shaq hogged against the sh*t nets )
- 2003 ( kobe could have been named mvp the same way jordan was for his 1st award. overlooking bird and magic's lesser numbers and #1 record.. ditto with duncan )
- 2004 ( if karl malone was healthy )
- 2006 ( ditto on the mvp )
- 2007 ( ditto on the mvp )
- 2008 ( if andrew bynum was healthy )
- 2009 ( kobe could have been named mvp... if his name wasnt kobe.. much harder to win 65 in the west than 66 in the east )
- 2010 ( ditto again with mvp )
so in the end. because of his team mates health, shaqs greed, and media bias since kobe is public enemy number 1 and espn didnt have kobe as their agenda... kobe ended up with 5 rings, 2 finals mvps and 1 season mvp
instead of
7 rings ( 00, 01, 02, 04, 08, 09, 10 )
6 finals mvps ( 01, 02, 04, 08, 09, 10 )
6 season mvps ( 03, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 )
the difference between kobe and this outcome was a game here... a game there. a hogging team mate. and 2 injuries

PPG + RPG + APG + SPG + BPG - TOV for Kobe in 03: 42.3
Duncan: 40.5
Kobe: .550 TS%
Duncan: .564 TS%
Duncan beats him in every advanced stat, lead his team to the better record, and played far, far, far better defense than Kobe could.
Keep spewing that shit about Kobe being the 03 MVP though, even though he couldn't win more than 33% of his games without the actual best player on the Lakers.
God damn your agenda is so stupid. When the Lakers win like 50 games and the Spurs win 60, Kobe is the MVP because of his stats (which aren't even better). When LeBron or whoever has way better stats than Kobe he is the MVP because of wins.

The Lakers have only won two titles over the past 12 years, while the Spurs won four titles during the same span.
It would have been impossible to accomplish such a feat without Kobe's help. He has prioritized money, personal glory and stat padding ahead of winning and team goals.
After the Lakers sealed the three-peat, no one could imagine the Spurs were destined to win three titles over the next five years.

After the Lakers sealed the three-peat, no one could imagine the Spurs were destined to win three titles over the next five years.
The Spurs had no business winning the title in 2003. Fortunately, Kobe wanted to be the “man” and missed 90 shots in the WCSF.
Kobe ran Shaq out town in 2004 ... the Spurs took advantage of the Lakers' freefall in 2005 and 2007. What happened next was a small price to pay after three unexpected titles.
History repeat itself this decade. Kobe chased scoring records, disrupted the team chemistry, played heavy minutes at an advanced age and suffered a serious injury, ran Howard out of town (Stay D12, they said) and scared off free agents. The Spurs won another unexpected title in 2014.
As a small market team, it's impossible to compete with the Lakers over a long period of time without some help from LA.
Basically, Kobe has held the Lakers hostage since the early 00's.
Thanks Kobe.
Basically Kobe was a bench warmer before Shaq, and a diva after Shaq.

LOL exaclty, and where is my Back to the Future Hoverboard, Kobe? Disappointment.
OP's premise is a little weak. So he took a slice in time when Kobe hype was at its greatest and measured him against that? So many other players have been compared to Jordan, so i guess every one of them is a disappointment as well? Silly.
I always go back to this. You have a favorite sports team. If they could draft/trade for a rookie that would play his entire career for your team, bring you countless unbelievable moments, crazy record breaking performances, 7 Finals appearances, 5 championships, and end up #3 in scoring all time, would you want that player on your team? Of course? Kobe is the kind of player all sports franchises hope for.
To call him a disappointment by comparing him to the #1 or #2 GOAT of all time is quite disrespectful.

LOL. Stans were excited and haters were shook at the possibility of Kobe winning 8-9 titles after 2001. Kobe doesn't have a normal career trajectory. After 2001 at 22 years of age logic dictated that there was no where to go but up for Kobe but he didn't really improve much from 2001. In fact many years he declined from 2001 on offense and defense. 2001 Kobe had legit 1st team all D.
Jordan > Kobe and it isn't close.
I agree. The strong argument that 22 year old Kobe > 22 year old MJ further validates my point. It was suppose to be much closer than it actually is.
