Two years from now, when James becomes an unrestricted free agent again, he’ll be able to reap the financial rewards of signing after the NBA’s new television deals are cut. If the money paid by ESPN, Turner Sports and Fox Sports (yes, they NBA could have three TV partners instead of the current two, following the trail blazed by the NFL) is double what is being paid under the current deal, the salary cap will rise accordingly.
If, for argument’s sake, if the salary cap rises to $100 million, James would be eligible for a new contract with a maximum salary of 35 percent of the cap. With 7.5 percent annual raises, James would be eligible for a new five-year contract with salaries of $35 million in Year 1, then $37,626,000, $40,250,000, $42,875,000, $47,550,000.
That adds up to $201.5 million. Source: SheridanHoops.com

Can someone explain to me how small market teams would be able to afford or compete against bigger markets if that happens?

Because they all will make more money from the TV deal.

I hope that doesn't happen, but it wouldn't be all that strange if it did. In the example used in the OP, a $100M cap is used. Right not the cap is $63M, so $100M would be an increase of 59%. If you take the $129M contract that Carmelo was eligible for, and you increase it by 59%, you get $205M.

And he would still get underpaid.

1 million dollars is overpaying the man big time.
None of the players are really worth it.
I'd rather give those millions to a miner or other guy that works his ass off in danger every day for the good of others.

MJ was getting $33 million in the late 90's before there was a cap on salaries. Given the inflation of salaries in basketball since then, where guys like Bosh get $22 million and Carmelo $25 million, I could definitely see the best player in the league getting $45-50 million if the cap rises and the max remains 35% of the cap.

Get 1.2 million people to buy a coal miners jersey yearly the money will be there to give him.
Guys like Lebron and Kobe can generate a billion dollars in merchandising sales alone in a career.
Lets not even go into what sponsors pay because a prized demographic watches them in primetime.
They make the money because we give it to them. Simple as that.

Personally I think the cap on individual player salary should be lower.
If the salary cap doesn't move much for a couple of years, one player can end up making nearly half the cap by himself, which makes it virtually impossible for that team to be competitive. The max a player can make should be something like 1/3rd of the cap, no matter what.

with a higher cap, a higher salary is less harmful to the teams flexibility
