LeBron has shown his cards. He signed a 1 yr deal to leverage Cle into transforming itself from a team built for the future into a team built to win today. Everyone knows it. Its an AWFUL way to play poker.
Most of you consider me a LeBron stan and its probably a reasonable assessment. But the way he has utilized his power has done his career a great disservice. In Cle he pressed the FO to get Larry Hughes, and a string of equally awful trades/signings.
Then Miami happened. Everyone thinks Bosh, LeBron, and Wade signed in Miami together. And there was plenty of cap space to do just that. But in the end Miami ended up doing SnTs with the Raps and Cle so they could get the guys the 5th year (the one all of them opted out of). The price was REALLY high. The Toronto picks ended up being Valanciunus and Bogdanovic. The Cle picks were almost as painful. There was a pick that bounced around a bunch before bouncing back to Miami when they took Norris Cole. Norris Cole isn't all that important, but when Chicago traded it back it was able to get the rights to Mirotic. The 2nd ended up being Crowder and he was picked one spot before Draymond Green. Cle ALSO has the Miami #1 this year and has a euro player stashed from one of the other picks.
So Miami traded away Valanciunus, Bagdonovic, Norris Cole (or Mirotic), and Crowder (or possibly D Green), plus a #1 for the ability to give LeBron Wade and Bosh a 5th year which no one even took. This was not Miami's idea.
If they don't make those deals Miami has massive reinforcements. Maybe last year plays out differently. Or they can at least use those assets to bring in other vets. Maybe that team is even still together.
LeBron appears to be doing the same thing here. Scorching the future when its completely unnecessary.
