I could be wrong, but I am looking at the Eastern Conference, and I have this strong hunch that the Wizards are going to come out of the gate on fire.
Let me say this, the Wizards lost the to the Pacers in the 2nd round last year. But anybody who watched the series saw the Wizards built 20 point leads on the Pacers repeatedly, and because of inexperience and a terrible bench gave up the lead two games in a row. It was a more talented team losing due to inexperience and bad decision making.
Overall last year, the Wizards had two huge weaknesses, a terrible bench and they didn't have a closer in the clutch. I believe they had the most overtime games in the league last year and lost most of them. Paul Pierce, meanwhile, was #3 in the league in clutch 3-pointers last year. A welcome addition.
The bench this year? We are talking about Andre Miller/Paul Pierce/Kris Humphries/Dejuan Blair. I actually think this is a team that would now make the playoffs in the Western Conference. That is the bench. Your starting line up is Wall/Beal/Porter/Nene/Gortat.
So essentially in the Eastern Conference, you have a top 4 PG, a top 4 SG, a top 4 PF, and a top 4 C. And now you have a good bench? Really?
They have offense, defense, and I think both Wall and Beal are going to be better last year after having tasted the playoffs. Otto Porter has been doing great in summer league. No reason to think he doesn't have a good year.
They will have a top 3 backcourt in the league, but how about the frontcourt. Now you have a big man rotation of Nene/Gortat/Humphries/Blair. Let's be real, who else is that deep on big man in the East?
I could horribly wrong, but based on talent, the Wiz have a solid shot at the being the best team in the East.
