Brazil's president was invited :lol
This church is the richest one in Brazil (not counting the Catholic Church), they are estimated to receive 2 billion dollars per year in offerings/tithes, and pay 0 taxes
They own a national TV Station and a bunch of other shit, they even have churches in the U.S, Africa and Europe. 2 years ago a preacher from this church had the preference of 20% of the population to become mayor of S

How does building a church stop Christians from helping the poor?

395 million dollars cant be used in ways to more directly help the poor?
The bible pretty clearly is against ostentatious displays of wealth, and in general very anti rich
Matthew 19:24
(And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. ).
Deuteronomy 22:11
Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together.
Leviticus 19:19
Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
or
You must obey all my decrees. "Do not mate two different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread.
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Hebrews 13:5
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.
Proverbs 11:28
Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
etc, you could go on for days
The bible contradicts itself on many things, its opinion on the wealthy and displays of wealth is not one of them

Didnt see the thread, besides displays of wealth by a christian is somewhat ironic
There is no sacred book that states that americans should care for the poor.

But isn't it a value espoused by so many on the left?
The Christian right gives FARRR more to charitable causes than the left. Fact.
The left wants to redistribute all the rich people's income to themselves and others. But they never wanna give any of THEIR OWN TIME OR MONEY to those less fortunate than they are.
You are obsessed with casting christians as hypocrites. And yet every aspersion you fling is filled with thick, gooey irony. You are the exact left wing EQUIVALENT of a sanctimonious far-right preacher who does not practice his words. But you are too fixated on assaulting the enemy to glance at the mirror and see how ironic all your positions are. The denial is heavy with this one.

Not me. I think the idea that humans will voluntarily help each other out is an inconsistent basis to build a society around and ridiculous for policy planning. Government compulsion of the rich to give up a small portion of their income (nominal tax rates are irrelevant, as an accountant I know that no rich person pays their nominal tax rate and will almost in all cases pay a lower rate than middle class people, also if you factor taxation other than income taxation, such as sales taxes, duties, etc the rich pay a less than anyone else as a percentage of total income) is necessary for the welfare of the poor.
Eg. public education is far more effective in educating the populace than churches that funded private schools for the poor.
Eg. Medicare is the best and cheapest form of healthcare in America.
The Christian right gives FARRR more to charitable causes than the left. Fact.
Well yes, we consider donations to churches to be charitable. Many devout christians tithe 10% to their church. I often question how much good beyond the lives of the minister/preacher/priest is helped.
Also a lot of these donations are for political stuff like abstinence only education, counseling/advocating against for pro life, etc rather than stuff to help poor people.
The left wants to redistribute all the rich people's income to themselves and others. But they never wanna give any of THEIR OWN TIME OR MONEY to those less fortunate than they are.
Many people on the left and who have spoken out in favor of redistribution are wealthy, eg Bill gates, Warren Buffet, Oprah, etc.
In fact Gates goes far further than I am comfortable with.
I Also want to take sales taxes, income taxes, and property taxes, etc and pool them into one budget.
I would like to see less municipal and state control of budgets.
I want taxes at the clinton rates. Any more than that and I would vote against it. I think the bush tax cuts made taxes too low and is hurting the country. The truth is I care about the deficit more than most conservatives.

you make a lot of assumptions.
1. I have never said people should give to charity. that is entirely their choice. Governments need to get budgets from somewhere. People like my parents are the group that will miss the money the least.
2. I give to charity. Unicef, the united way, and breast cancer research.
You are obsessed with casting christians as hypocrites.
Not really, If I was it would be all I post about. the bible in itself is hypocritical and contradicts itself. Eg. parts of the bible condemn slavery, parts of the bible support and justify it.
i dont really care, christianity is a dying religion in the western world. In europe its already on the way out. as people became richer and more educated, this is to be expected. Replaced by atheism. the same will happen in america, not in my lifetime but eventually. Its like gay rights, I dont really care that much because it is inevitable and I am happy with the arch of history and the inevitability.
I suspect You are mad because trends are going against you. Eg. society has changed to the point you cant call black people lazy in real life. You are appalled at the changes in society and post diatribes in hopes that your message will stop the political correctness that is taking over. I suspect you wish you were living in the 1960s and could openly voice all of your opinions without getting fired in real life.
