Duncan won in 99 with GARBAGE guards (avery, oldass sean, mario elie, LOL) and oldass D-ROB.

and dont give me the "lockout year" excuse .. Shaq had as good a chance as any to win that year! You know where Shaq was that year? Getting SWEPT by Tim Duncan 4-0.

Shaq NEVER did anything noteworthy without HOF-caliber 2guard to carry him (penny, wade, kobe)

Shaq is in my top 10, but people wanna put him top 5 , over Duncan LMAO. Not even close. Shaq lacked the mental fortitude to be a defensive anchor and clutch player that Duncan was .

Duncan 5 rings.. even without HOF guards

Im so nba'd out

People bring up the Lakers getting swept in the 98' WCF and by the Spurs in the 99' WCSF. However, let's look at what Shaq did and what his teammates did in those series.

1998 WCF

Shaq 32/9/1 on 56%
Jones 15/4/3 on 41%
Kobe 10/2/2 on 37%
Van Exel 9/2/4 on 24%

1999 WCSF

Shaq 24/13/1 on 49%
Kobe 21/7/3 on 45%
Rice 18/4/1 on 37%
Fisher 8/4/5 on 39%

Shaq slightly underperformed in 99' but outside of Kobe he didn't get much help. In 98' his teammates simply did not show up at all.

You can't be serious? I'm as big a fan of Bruce as anyone, but he won't even be considered.

Old ass D Rob? You mean the guy who averaged 16/10 while playing elite defense? The same Robinson who was better than Duncan in the Blazers series and about as good in the Wolves series? The Spurs always had an amazingly well balanced team with a GOAT-level coach. From 2003 onwards they had very strong talent. In 1999 their talent was just ok but they also had probably the easiest road to a title in NBA history...

Please stop with this GOAT coach shit. Pop was almost fired that year. He said, multiple times, anyone can coach a squad with two stars. He was running the most vanilla offense in the league.

I agree with everything else you said, other than the Spurs having the easiest road to the Finals.

When did Shaq have a historically easy road to the Championship like 03 Duncan...

I guess he could have had one in 99 until he got swept as the favourite. :confusedshrug:

i don't really count 1999

it was a 50 game season and they faced the 8th seed knicks in the finals with an injured patrick ewing missing every game

and he had another hall of fame player who's leaps and bounds ahead of his hall of fame guards that joined later on. gotta give d-rob half the credit

so whats half of nothing divided by a diaper covered in robinsons feces

so a great player won a ring without 2-peating because he had a cast of decent players and he played great himself.

another one may have had questionable work ethic yet his worst effort was winning as a 2nd option.

We all know that Duncan did more with less.

The reason is very simple :

- At the offensive end, Duncan is the closest thing to Shaq.

- At the defensive end, Duncan is the closest thing to Ben Wallace.

Duncan is the best 2 way player during the post-Jordan. On top of that, Duncan leads and inspires his teammates by example. All those things make him very easy to build around.

Steve Kerr
(http://www.ign.com/articles/2007/03/13/steve-kerr-interview)
Tim (Duncan) was the easiest guy to play with on earth. He is super mellow and would put all the blame on him ...

Playing with Tim was easy because he is so mellow of a guy, very accommodating and he is an incredibly nice guy. He did not put any pressure on anybody.
