It doesn't even have to be specific to Kobe..all top-tier offensive greats reach that level where no one person can guard them. 2012 Lebron, 2006 Kobe, 2000 Shaq, 1994 Hakeem, MJ for most of his career, etc. They'll have bad nights, but for the most part when they're on their game no one has a chance.

A George Karl Nuggets team led by chucker Melo - a team that never made it out of the first round every other year in the West. A crappy Jazz team that struggled with injuries all year? Spurs/Mavs/Suns - the great teams of the mid 2000s - were all declining and in partial rebuilding mode then. Kobe and the Lakers took advantage of a weak Western Conference that had no great teams. As soon as the Mavs got a decent center, they swept Phil into retirement and humiliated the Lakers.
