Durant or Rose?
I've argued with Bulls fans who truly think Rose was a better player. What say you?

Except this thread has nothing to do with the MVP.

Just gonna copy and paste from a post I made when moe and I had this discussion like a month ago.
I'd say Durant was the stronger player..but 2010-11 Durant was far from the all-around player he is today, and Rose has a legit argument. Rose's role on that Bulls team was much more crucial. Durant was the pure scorer for his team, he really had no stake in playmaking or setting up his teammates back then. Westbrook was a 22/5/8/2 player that season, and he took a ton of pressure off of Durant with his ball handling, passing, driving, etc. Rose never played with anyone even remotely close to Westbrook's level, dude was the singular driving force of the Bulls offense and consistently the focal point of the opposing defense. When he played subpar, the Bulls and their offense were basically ****ed and had to compensate with their defense. This is why his season was so great, he consistently came through in the clutch and singlehandedly drove that offense all year. Durant never had to shoulder that burden alone in 2010-11.
Then we get into the stats themselves, which show how close it is.
Rose:
25 / 4.1 / 7.7 / 1.0 / 0.6 on 55% TS
23.5 PER
13.1 WS
113 ORTG, 103 DRTG
Net On/Off: +2.7 (+8.1 playoffs)
Durant:
27.7 / 6.8 / 2.7 / 1.1 / 1.0 on 59% TS
23.6 PER
12.0 WS
115 ORTG, 107 DRTG
Net On/Off: -0.6 (+6.2 playoffs)
Durant was clearly the better scorer. But I don't think 2.7ppg offsets the 5 apg difference, which is pretty huge. The difference in PER is almost negligible. Same goes for the O/DRTG considering how good Westbrook was for Durant, and how good Chicago's bench was defensively. On/off and win shares are where you get a pretty clear edge for Rose - his team's offense was 10.1 points better with him on the court, while Durant's was just 4.3 points better. Relative to their positions, neither were great defenders.
Not saying I'd take Rose. Just saying there's definitely a case for him when you consider roles, support (mostly offensive support), and how they contributed to their team's success.

I'll take 2011 Rose's ability to dictate tempo and pace over 2011 Durant's scoring ability.

You should consider that rose had the ball almost all the time, over dubeta. Also rose had a very stacked team. Deng, boozer, Noah and thibadou is STACKED.

It was only a matter of time, honestly. I say so much stupid shit on here I'm surprised it's been like two months since my last ban.

First of all, no it wasn't and clearly isn't. I was here in 2011 and most people didn't think that. I sure as hell didn't.
Was Rose even top 5 in 2011?
LeBron
Durant
Howard
Kobe
Wade
All better players, at least.
I'm saying Rose because of his defense - not that Durant was a bad defender or anything, but Rose dominated in 2011.
Offensively they were close, might give Durant a slight edge. Rose had the edge defensively.

If you were really here then you'd know Rose was definitely in that top 5. Anytime you saw Rose play in a national TV game, he lit it up, he won MVP. He helped carry Chicago to the best record in the NBA with a rookie head coach, Boozer and Noah both missing chunks of games, a new nucleus of players, and Keith Bogans as his SG.
At no point in his career has Rose been the best player in the league
Neither has Durant.

As someone noted, neither has Durant. Why do people equate MVP with best player? Plenty of players have won MVP without being the best player--even before Nash. If MVP=best player LeBron would have won every year since 2009, MJ would have won every year from 1990-1993/1996-1998, KAJ would have won every year in the 70's plus 1980, and so on.
