View Full Version : If you could only listen to Hip-Hop from one city for the rest of your life?

I was thinking about this in the top 5 rappers thread and I thought it was a little more interesting. My thought in that thread was that you could give me 4 Chicago guys plus Outkast and I'd be good.

I said hip hop and not rap so that R&B style music could be included (Usher & Ciara in ATL for example).

Which would you choose?
New York?
Chicago?
Atlanta?
Los Angeles?
New Orleans?
Houston?
Philly?

LA easily for me.

4 of my favorite rappers are from there too.

Plus there's Kendrick and all of Black Hippy.

Bay Area is a nice one. I might want so R&B so I can go with the classic Tony Toni Tone.

I'm from Houston, and can only take so much Screw and Beyonce music. I'd pull my hair out listen to "Still Tippin" and "Get Me Bodied."

No, I mean Usher and Ciara aren't even from Atlanta.

Oh, ok. I wouldn't get that nitpicky. They both carved out their careers in Atlanta and are associated with that sound so I don't see why they shouldn't be included. Tupac wasn't born in LA but nobody is going to say he doesn't count as an LA rapper.

And good call on Bay Area forgot that one.

HOUSTON because you must also take into consideration all the rappers who have bitten off its style 100%

so you get UGK, scarface, zro, tre, paul wall chamill, slim, flip, etc...

PLUS you also get the following rappers who copied houstons style 100%:

drake, future, lil wayne, etc...

houston >>> everything

If I could only have 5 albums to listen to for the rest of time. Only ONE would be hip-hop and it would be 2pac's greatest hits

Considering I have a pretty thick playlist on my Spotify called Empire State Rap, I'ma go with my gut and say NYC.

NY easily. I can never get enough of that 90's New York Boom Bap style tracks. If I ever get tired of the lyrics (doubtful), I can just rock Premier instrumentals on loop.

L.A. obviously is a contender but Detroit's a good one too. You got Em, Proof, D12, Royce, Big Sean, Danny Brown, Black Milk, Kid Vishis, Obie Trice, etc. Mad talent in Detroit.

Probably NY. Naturally the most diverse scene since it's the largest city.

Chicago for me.

Atlanta because most of the good new rap comes from there and I'm pretty sure it will continue that way for at least 5 more years plus there is already so much classic material.
I agree.

although if I could have Virginia I'd probably take that on the strength of Timbaland/Pharell/Clipse/Trey Songz/ Chris Brown/ Danja and Missy Elliot.

It would have to be new York. Lot more variety and many more to choose from. Minus like...5 people...id never need to hear a west coast song again.

But I have dozens of decent artists from new York still putting out good music. And I get a lot of good old school to go with it. Tribe called quest. De La Soul.

I could get by on NY alone.

My Spotify playlist for strictly New York rap is pretty damn sick, if I must say so.

I have no clue. I'd have to know where each producer came from.

But i'm pretty sure most of my favorite producers come from NYC.

I'd go with New York.

My favourite hip-hop artist Mr Mutha****in eXquire is from there. Also a lot of other dudes I listen too like Dillon Cooper, Pharoahe Monch, The Underachievers, Joey Badda$$, Flatbush Zombies, Mykki Blanco, Kool AD, ASAP Mob and EL-P.
