I actually would take the 06 Mavs, the true NBA champions. Jerry Stackhouse and Josh Howard were very solid role players.

Josh Howard was filthy in 2006.. sad for injuries he fell off the Map.. But I prefer the 2011 team. Dirk was just on a tear, like a man possessed.

Yeah I agree. Josh Howard was so nasty in 2006. Was by far my favorite role player that year.

its unfortunate that the refs completely ruined the flow of the game. wade could just run to the rim with his eyes closed and if anyone wanted to do something about it they got a foul called against them. felt real bad for the mavs that year.

2006 and it's not all that close. People forget how good dirk was in that run up till the finals and the absolute murder the heat got away with against him(most specifically Haslem and posey Bruce bowening him on nearly every jumper) that had every bit as much to do with the mavs losing that series as the wade calls. He was at least as good in 06 as he was in 11. Maybe not quite the shooting machine but so much better at everything else.

He was avging 28.4/11.9/3.1/1.2 steals on .494/.395/.897 with only 2.1 topg

2006. Dirk was still in his prime.

Refs handed the title to D-whistle and co.

2011.

2006 had stronger individual players (Dirk in his MVP years, younger and fresher Jason Terry, Josh Howard back when he was actually good, Stackhouse providing bench scoring, Devin Harris showing promise, Marquis Daniels who no one remembers but who was pretty dangerous... even the Dampier/Diop combo essentially adds up to a 13 rpg, 3 bpg center, not Tyson Chandler offensively but arguably just as good if not better defensively), but didn't have the same coaching, functioned less as a team, the offense was easier to stop, the rim protection was worse... most of all, that 2011 team wouldn't choke against a relatively weak Finals opponent. They would ruthlessly finish them off in 4 games.

How you close out games matters and the 2011 Mavs is an all-time great team at closing out. They could start a game horribly only to completely take over in the fourth quarter. Due to the mental edge alone, I would trust the 2011 Mavs to beat the 2006 Mavs in a 7 game series.

the 2011 Mavs were a different version of Mavs I'd ever seen them in the playoffs.

the best way for me to put it, was that they didn't look at each round of playoff as if it's the 1st round, the 2nd round, the conference finals. they literally treated each opponent and each round individually and tore them apart.

many teams talk about. that team did it.

The Mavs 2011 were the most determined team i've seen...they were on a mission and no one would stand between them and a championship.

All of the core guys,Dirk,Kidd,Marion,JET,Chandler,Peja had tremendous disappointments during their careers and they repaid all of those that year.

The Mavs 2006 were a terrific team but they were mentally weak and had an awful coach, while the Mavs in 2011 are probably in the top 5 all time clutch team (Dirk/Kidd/Terry/Marion/Chandler)and had a fantastic coach.

2011 b/c Rick Carlisle would run circles around Avery w/matchups. Avery couldnt make adjustments on the fly for shit.

Tough call actually in terms of talent, but it becomes a no brainer when you factor in Carlisle vs. Avery.

That seems to be what everyone always ignores. Give the 06 Mavs Carlisle? Please...we definitely win in my opinion.

Good thread though...in terms of the best Mavs teams of the Dirk era...factoring in everything from talent to fit to coaching...etc. I rank the top 3 as;

1. 2003
2. 2011
3. 2006

The 2003 Mavs weren't as good as 04/05 or 06/07 let alone 05/06 and 10/11. That team had a big fat nothing inside. Notta. Did love NVE though, he gave the Mavs a major spark.

I could see the 06 and 07 arguments....but you think the 04 and 05 Mavs were better than 03?????? Really?

Definitely not 04...the defense was beyond bad. Just horrid...like worst in the league. 05 was a nice step in the right direction, but it was kind of the standard "year away" team in my opinion with adding two key players in Howard and Terry....and a new coach as well with Avery taking over during the season.

I'm on my phone and can't really check well, but I'd bet the objective stuff like ortg and drtg and scoring differential all favor 03...over 04 and 05. If someone wanted to post that I'd appreciate it...i'm just curious now.
