uh... yeah, and Kobe was a role player in his first championship lol.

Anyway, #6 has got to be Larry Bird.

For those of you who are unaware, the East was dramatically stronger than the West during the 80's, and Magic had more help than Bird, and the notion that Magic > Bird developed after their careers were mostly over because of the value people place on rings (A TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENT). While they were playing, there wasn't much doubt that Bird > Magic. Just food for thought.

I still have Kobe over both, but on my personal all time list Bird comes in at 5 ahead of Magic.

Shaq.

*Arguably the GOAT peak--definitely a top 3 peak.
*A prime that lasted from 1994-2005.
*A top 10 player from 1993-2006.
*A legitimate all-star as late as 2009.
*4 rings, 6 Finals, 9 conference finals.
*Was the best player on a team that won 3 consecutive rings.
*Took Orlando from 21 wins to 41 as a rookie.
*Made Orlando, L.A. and Miami championship contenders.

Kobe was never a role player in all his championship.. He was 2nd option in his first finals not even close to a role a player.. In 01 to 02 he was 1b then Shaq left in 2004 because Kobe has already taken his spot as the 1st option.. After that Kobe has always been the 1st option, even when he's injured he's still the first option as a coach.. FYI Kobe at the sideline as coachBe contributed more than Duncan as a role player.. God damn you are a salty hater. Nobody's calling 01/02 Kobe a role player. He was a star.

00 Kobe is a role player if Duncan was one though. His team won with him shooting 38% in the Finals. Statistically the two are about even, and Duncan's advanced stats across the board were better.

And no, CoachBe didn't contribute more. People might start taking you seriously if you make a real point. Not just make believe to prop up your boy.

Kobe was injured thats why he's a bit inefficient but Kobe made tons of clutch shot int that series to make up for not shooting well.. And eventually they won the championship because of that.. Him being clutch is almost as important as Shaq dominance in that series.. This is not even comparable to Duncan as a role player.. So dont compare 00's Kobe to Duncan 14 as a role player..

Its the truth.. Why are you surprised?

Because Shaq basically scored three times as many points and now one facet of a hobbled/role player's game is just as important?

Any player shooting 39% is a negative impact player on offense, especially when you're a scorer. And Kobe didn't even lock down the opposing team's best wing player either, which is what he was supposed to be good at in the 2000 season.

Everything you write has a stupid agenda anyway. You said the TOSB on the sidelines was more important than the Spurs' best player last year. :facepalm

Sustained Elite play matters more to me... For Duncan you get 99-07, 8 years... LeBron, realistically, has surpassed, wait, at least tied it, if you don't want to count 2005... Going for more too.

Basically years of being a title caliber 1st option, top 3 or even 5 player... LeBron has been that all the last 8 years... Pretty close imo.

So of course, thinking LeBron's career would end tommorow, Duncan.. But he really doesn't need much more.

Edit: Also LeBron's peak is way better, not for single season, but because of length of peak..

2009-2014 is epic play besides the '11 finals

I didnt compared Kobe to Shaq as a player.. I compared Kobe being clutch to Shaq dominance as being equally important.. Obviously Shaq was by far the better player in that finals but if not for Kobe hitting tons of clutch shot, the Lakers probably lost that series..

Not really.

1-2: MJ and KAJ
3-4: If you have Russell here, you had to have Wilt too.
5-7: If you have Bird here, you have to have Magic here. Duncan just happened to break into the Consensus Six after last year for some people. Some still have Duncan at solid #7.

Nothing wrong with Duncan being in with Bird and Magic either. TD played well and consistent enough to have had a F-MVP last June if you go by consistency (but KL had more impact). And last year, he was one miracle play away from a ring and a F-MVP. TD could be 6/5(or 4)/2 instead of 5/3/2.

I think the last 2 seasons should elevate Duncan's legacy by a small margin. That small margin have swung people's opinion for him into Top 5. It's not like he was the 7th or 8th man on his team or got swept or humiliated in in the Finals either.

I can understand. His peak numbers weren't GOAT tier.

But it was his intangibles. GOAT lvl BBIQ. (Even Laimbeer, who hates Bird and vice versa, and played/beat MJ/Magic, said that you'd be hard pressed to find a smarter guy on the court).

The white boy pulls out the right play whenever he needed to. His playmaking was elite. Magic said before (i know, he loves him) that Bird was the only person he was afraid of facing. Isiah Thomas called his jump shot the "kiss of death". :oldlol:

The list isn't that bad.. Magic is a teir below the top 3-4...
Then it's pretty much a close wash between Duncan, bird and magic.. As this list will show..
Then shaq and hakeen prob fill out the 10.. It's pretty close to being right

I love the fact Magic & Bird are neck and neck, I voted for Bird but either is a correct choice.

I've met Tim Duncan and think he's an incredible player and person.

However, to suggest he's better than Larry Bird or Magic Johnson is really rather absurd.

Duncan has easily accomplished more than Bird. Easily. Bird's prime impact exceeded Duncan's (not by some unimaginable amount consider the huge gap on defense), and he has an extra 6-7 years of play (whatever it is).

It's not absurd in the slightest to say Duncan is better than Bird. Magic is tight, but the argument here is they won the same amount but Duncan did it with less help against stiffer competition (of course their Finals opponents can't be compared, but the 80s West is weaker than the 2000s West).

I'd take Magic over Duncan depending on the day. But Bird's injuries and short career means almost anyone in the top 10 has some sort of argument over him, as sad as that is. :confusedshrug:

I don't think absurd is the word you're looking for. An absurd suggestion would be something like "there's a plutonian dwarf in my left shoe" or "the trees on the fourth floor are barking Wagner". "Tim Duncan is better than Magic Johnson" is a reasonable sentence - one that expresses an opinion, not a fact, but the claim being made is far from baseless, or just plain odd, like say "James Buchanan is the best president in US history". Resume, stats, evidence of impact point to Duncan being at least comparable to Magic and Bird. He definitely belongs in the conversation.

Of course we all know the real reason Tim Duncan is so high in this particular ranking is that he just won the championship. It's a familiar pattern: casual fans tend to forget Tim Duncan except for the times where he's just won the title.
As soon as the season starts again, the familiar arguments will be heard again: that he wasn't dominant (false), that it was "the system" or "Popovich" or some other such mysterious entity that somehow strips Duncan of achievements that would be praised if they were anyone else's work.

yeah I started watching in 2005, that's why I vote wilt and Russell so high... dumbass... look it feels weird to me putting magic and bird out of the top 5, but when I line them up against each of mj, kareem, wilt, russell, and duncan, those guys come out on top.

If you were to compare CAREER resumes, and PEAK seasons, right now...Lebron edges Bird out. The only edge Bird has would be in rings, with a 3-2 margin. They both played in five Finals, and again, Bird has a 3-2 margin. They both have two FMVPs. Lebron actually has been a better post-season performer, too. In his 12 playoff seasons, Bird's high ppg was at 27.5 ppg, with another at 27.0 ppg. In his nine post-seasons, Lebron has had five higher than Bird's best, ranging between 28.2 ppg to 35.3 ppg, three of which were 30.3 ppg +. He also had a 27.4 ppg post-season, as well.

Lebron also has been more efficient, and has a higher career TS% and eFG%. Their apg is nearly equal (Bird with a 6.5 to 6.4 apg edge.) The only clear areas in which Bird has a statistical edge are rpg (10.3 to 8.4 rpg), and FT% (.890 to .755 .)

Lebron has already won more MVPs, 4-3, and has a higher career MVP ranking (albeit, Bird's fell off in his declining seasons.) And in terms of regular season statistical accomplishments, again, Lebron has been the better scorer (a considerably better scorer), and in the last few years his efficiency has shot thru the roof. Bird's highest FG% season was at .527. In Lebron's last three seasons he has put up .537, .565, and .567. Bird's two best eFG% marks were .555 and .556. Lebron has put up .603 and .610 in the last two seasons. Bird's two highest TS%'s were .608 and .612. Lebron has put up .640 and .649 in his last two years.

And there is no question that Lebron has been the better defensive player, either. Bird had three seasons of 2nd team all-defense. Lebron? Six first-team all-defensive selections.

Sorry, but Lebron has already passed Bird, and barring injuries, he will blow away Bird's resume by the time he hangs it up.

so let me get this straight, Bird won 3 rings when his conference competition was the bad boy pistons and jordans bulls....

lebron won 2 rings when his conference competition was the pacers and rose led bulls.

interesting.

Care to compare Bird's rosters to Lebron's...especially LBJ's last two seasons in Cleveland, when he took his rosters to records of 66-16 and 61-21...and which then fell to 19-63 after he left?

As for Bird-Magic...give me Magic who was the better playoff performer, the better "winner", better H2H, more rings, and more FMVPs.

As a side-note...in their career H2H's, Magic has the TWO highest scoring games between the two (games of 37 and 39 points.)
