"By trailing by 3 or less"
Why 3? Why not 4 or 5 or 6.
What was the reasons for choosing 3?
Shooting for the tie or lead? So if they were down 3 and made a 2 it doesn't count towards this?

Nice, but I find 30 seconds to be too long. So much happens during a close game, so many fouls and possessions. Would rather see 10 seconds.

:facepalm Are you an idiot? How can you shoot for the lead or tie if you are down more than 3 points? This obviously is not taking into account four point plays.

"Clutch" as determined by this particular metric.
I think we may need new words for all the variations of clutch.
It's A VC3!!!

Joe Johnson really only boosted his percentage in his last two seasons with the Nets. I think he is like 12 of 13 in that span.

Yeah there was a graphic I saw in 2009 that had Carter as number 1 on that list since 2001 specifically, so it's weird this one doesn't even have him on.

I trust lebron a lot more now to take the last shot. The guy's developed some mental fortitude over the past few years. :applause:

Basically this. Lebron used to be hella unreliable in the clutch, but I've slowly begun to feel really comfortable when he has the ball at the end of the game

Exactly. I know he'll never be ferociously competitive like MJ/Russell/Bird. (That's purely innate and a natural proble-- er, trait). But you can definitely mentally toughen up through adversity. :applause:

It says "when trailing by 3 or less(or tied)" & "when shooting for the lead or tie"
So if you shoot a 2, while down 3, it apparently isn't being counted in this stat.. Because you aren't shooting for the lead or for the tie.

Uh... if you're currently tied it's not clutch at all really. It's a free shot. Hit it and win, miss it and go to overtime.
Flawed stat is flawed.

Flawed stat is flawed.
So if the score is tied, a game winning shot in Game 7 of the Finals isn't clutch. Got it

Pretty lazy on the part of the researchers. stats.nba.com goes back to 96-97 (first season for which play-by-play data exists). Not many players still in the league from back then, but it would've taken them 5-10 more minutes.

I sorta agree, but sorta disagree. It's clutch IMO, but I do think do-or-die shots, where you're down, and NEED to make a shot have more value than those to go ahead from a tie. Miss? You still have an OT period. Would be interesting to see this stat covering only situations in which you're down one possession.

Why did you bring up 'Kobetards?' We're talking about an obscure stat.

I can agree with this for the following reason:
So if the score is tied, a game winning shot in Game 7 of the Finals isn't clutch. Got it
Situational, then. Mostly, not that clutch. Big playoff games? Much more clutch.

Because it's essentially a one possession game at that point and teams often give up free 2's when they are up 3 and that would skew the numbers needlessly.
Obviously it's not the end all be all, but 30 seconds left in one possession games seems like a really good indicator of super clutch situations. I'd love to see ft shooting and stuff like that as well.

Exactly....
Because teams often give up two's there freely.
What is so hard about this to understand? That would be bad information fed into the system.

Kobe Bryant. Period.
He has the balls and intestinal fortitude to make shit happen. No deferring. No fear.
He, MJ, and Bird are the 3 best clutch players of all time.

If this stat means "clutch" why is Jerry West considered Mr. Clutch when he shot 37% in the playoffs the only season he won a ring?

LMAO at kobe fans coming out and saying its a flawed stat because kobe has a terrible percentage :oldlol:
