That is unacceptable.

Someone's head should roll for allowing them to play on that court.

The angle is different.

Yep.

These guys are supernatural athletes.

He knew he SHOULD have had plenty of space.

It's an awful, awful injury and I would bet it will provoke change in response. I believe it would be shortsighted to not at least consider the notion of moving the stanchions back.

That said, I have a slightly difficult time faulting anyone here. The Thomas & Mack Center has had those basket stanchions for a long time if I'm not mistaken, and nothing even remotely close to this situation has ever occurred over thousands and thousands of minutes of gameplay there (to the best of my knowledge). The same can be said for most other courts with stanchions at the same distance.

If moving things back is a simple fix, then it'd be a simple decision. But if it means basketball hoop manufacturers have to re-structure everything they've ever done in the name of a single awful injury, there'd probably have to be some serious deliberation.

All that said, what a terrible ending to this evening's festivities. I wish Paul George the best.

Is this a Thomas and Mack thing or a college basketball court thing? The amount of baseline space.

Its a T&M thing.

If you look at the top picture, the stanchion is supposed to be behind that little dotted white line the cameramen are sitting on.

Its not. I dont recall if it was like that watching UNLV last season, but I do know thats the distance its supposed to be away from the court.

Is this a Thomas and Mack thing or a college basketball court thing? The amount of baseline space. That's a good question. I'd never really thought to pay a lot of attention in that regard. I took a quick look at Michigan's court (from the mid-2000's) and their stanchion seemed to be in-between the two photos in the original post. I'd have to look at others.

I always thought the standard was to have the base chill on the other side of the baseline banner text. Here's Nerlens' injury at Kentucky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFsUXzSYh9w

I think it'd depend on what basket system a team owns, right? Unless the arm length is adjustable (I didn't think it was). In the Thomas & Mack case, that'd mean they could have only pushed the stanchion back as far as the structure would allow. They might have needed new hoops altogether to move it as much as they wanted.

It's a freak accident. Could have happened on an NBA court.

I hope this leads to some reform in the NBA in terms of how close the photographers back there sit.

Agreed.

I get the whole 'in the action' shot, but players trip and fall over those guys all the time. One wrong step leads to a ****ed ankle.

It does look about a foot closer, which would have been enough to save his leg.

Why don't we just bubble wrap the whole court?

I believe it was 2 feet closer.

On Paul George: stanchions must be 4 feet from baseline in NBA games. Last night in Vegas about an inch shy of that standard, source says.

Florida looked about the same as Thomas & Mack. I believe the NCAA standard is different from the NBA standard.

It's a college court thing.

One college coach: "Stanchions are closer in most college arenas. NBA's are all back farther. That one looked close. A tragic shame, if so.

Sacramento and Utah are both at the minimum 4 foot allowance
